I replaced the SG supports with guards on my 09 SG as well. Not for protection, but to be able to hang the guard pouches. As for damage with/without, it really depends on the surface you drop on...perfectly flat, zero speed, slow drop...you'll mrk the engine guard and bottom of the foot board. Hard/fast fall, even at zero speed or on an uneven surface...probably damage to the bags even with the guards.

i did it for the same reason...the guard bags. they are pretty handy to put stuff in. i bought a set off a RK on ebay for $65 then sold the SG supports on ebay for $95...so even made a little money.
My 08 FLHX was not over by Hurricane Ike while on the center stand. It ended up completely on it's side. It ended up with scratches on the edge of the fairing, floor board, guards, and saddlebag. The surprizing thing was that I had the bike cover on it and I think it reduce the number of scratches. I did try and removing the scratches before I had the insurance look at it, but I was unable to remove all the scratches from the flairing and saddlebag. The saddlebag ended up with scratches on the top and bottem of the bag and I think the cover caused the scratches on the top side of the saddlebag, but that is just my guess just on the scratches for the top of the saddlebag cover. This bike was also it with hail the size of golf ***** back in June on the right side of the bike, so now I have damage on both sides of the bike.
Sharknu is going to be happy...he hates the thought of someone else having a "rare" 105th FLHX ;-) Sorry about your damage...hopefully that's the only trouble you had from Ike.

Yeah, that was it. Compared to the people down south I'm very, very lucky.
If it goes down gently, (as in, your fighting to not let it go down hard) the bags will escape damage. It worked out that way once for one bike I know anyway.
Expect a mark on the engine guard, expect a nice scratch all along the outside bottom edge of the hard bag and expect a nice scratch on the outer fairing on the edge just outside of the mirror.
Don't ask me how I know this!
Amazing how foot pegs on the bars and a buddy that is really good with pin strips can make it all disapear without much expense.
I am curious how much if any damage there is to a FLHX in a zero speed drop. With out any bag guards do the bags take any damage or scratches? Any other damage?
Why not just test yourself and lay it over on the grass?..
that way you'll know first had what hits first and what to expect.
fwiw i dropped my ultra at a gas station with no damage other than embarrassment.
