GPS power cord ???????

GPS power cord ???????

I know allot of you hard wire your gps.Well I had plans on cutting off the cig lighter plug from the power cord.Before I did it I wanted to make sure the power output was 12v's.Well input is 12 but output is only 5volts.Any of you guys know how to get around this?I want to be able to unplug it and take the gps off the bike I only use it for trips and I didn't want to use the cig. lighter as it hits the tank at full left turn.Thanks.

Mine is hardwired, but I have a two pole flat wired in line so I can take it off. Pic below

My Magellan road mate needed a step down to 6 volts. I found someone on line that makes the harness with a heat resistant step down unit. Ran under tank and up under inner faring and then up the bars to the ram mount. If you have a 5 volt system, you can not simply cut of the charger head.

You didn't say what brand / model of GPS, but if the output of the Cig adapter is only 5 volts then it is also a transformer/ voltagte regulator and you can't get around using it.
