Man, I've got some upgrades to get! I am in SW Michigan and plan to ride until the roads are salted too! I wear a half helmet and leathers with a leather hanky thing. Hands are ok with heated grips but my toes are a bit cold with the boots. I need to get new ones. I'm visiting the 'warmskin' site now...
Have you looked into getting a set of soft lowers for your crash bars. I just put a set on and they work great for blocking the wind off my feet and shins. All I get now is a little wind across the corner of my knees. I just bought a heated jacket liner but haven't had time to wire in the harness. Even without the power, the liner has kept me toasty on a couple of 39-40 deg mornings.
I wear a "Turtle" brand Neck warmer. Made for skiing and snowmobilers. Pull the back side up over your ears, under your chin, and up over the top rear of your head. Really helps with the noise, is very warm, and comfy. It's a very heavy kind of fleesy material. Wish I could work a camera, I'd shoot a picture. Try Sportsman's Whse, Cabellas, Eddie Bauer, and any ski shops. I'm sure you can find them. Pretty popular in Montana.
The higher priced full face helmets are surprisingly quiet so depends on the type of helmet you've got as to noise. I wear FF in winter, balaclava under it, a wool sweater or other types of layering under a good windproof textile jacket and i'm good for 28-30 degrees. I wear Tourmaster Polar Tex gloves and they keep my fingers/hands warm also even at 70mph.
Not so sure about the higer priced helmet statement. I had a shoei @ $340. and it was noisy as all get out. I think it's the nature of the beast. I like my 1/2 with a balaclava.
I was out this morning with the temp just above freezing.
The idea is to stop the airflow past yer ears; it keeps yer head warm (ha ha). An open hood fitted to a parka does this, eh?
Picture the airflow with a 1/2 helmet fitted with curtains? The airflow is trapped between yer ears and the back of the curtain ........ forms a high pressure area .. drafty but not blasting. A full coverage is good but I know what you mean about noise. The 1/2 is cold as a witche's pap without the curtains.
I ride an UC. The fairing is fantastic but you still get the air flow on yer face. The Air Gauge indicates about 25. (ha ha). HD's XFRG (armoured GORTEX-nylon) is without a doubt the finest cold weather (M/C) equipment I've ever owned ($$). I find normal gloves work fine on the Ultra. Engine heat is a bonus when it's cold!
I hate the sound in the full face... short of wearing ear plugs, is there any option to get rid of the whoosh....J
jcbpa, You could be hearing wind buffetting from turbulance behind the back of the FF helmet. Check this by moving your head lower and closer to the windscreen. If doing so improves the condition, your problem is likely a windscreen which is to short/small. Taller/bigger windscreen moves the turbulance further out which for me removed the negative sound impact of turbulance.
Excellent thread this time of year, D%*# it, I hate winter...
Ah yes, I'm adding to my collection of windscreens trying to find the right one. I'm wondering if I get a really good one will it matter if I look through it? We look throught it when we drive our cages? I may start another on this... It's personal pref I know, I like looking over, but can't find one I can do that with. So have a tall for the cold months and then use the shorter in the great months!!! What do you think?
