Aside from my opinion of a better look, they have the ability to be "overstuffed" by moving the buckle up a hole or two. This is helpful on the road, especially for me, as I tend to return with more stuff than I left with (t-shirts, etc.).
I had the original leather but it seemed no matter how well I took care of them they wanted to warp. I replaced them with hard H-D bags factory painted. That was five years ago and they cost $600 apiece then.
