Default Question about RAM mount install...

I got my RAM mount pieces for my Garmin 2610, put the larger of the two U bolts on my 2009 Ultra Classic. I putting the bottom part of the mount on my handlebars about 2 inches down from my controls, right where the handlebars bend. This is the only place I could do it where I wouldn't be blocking my fuel gauge and radio.

I did notice that the bottom plastic piece has a tendency to favor one side as you tighten the bolts. Has anyone had luck when tightening the bolts down to have the bottom plastic piece remain even on both sides? It is nice and snug, probably just a cosmetic thing that I'm being picky about.

What plastic piece are you talking about? My u bolt is just that, a u bolt that mounts flush to the handlebar, with one nut on each side that goes through the mount. There are 2 plastic thread covers that screw on after the nuts are secure. If you tighten each nut equally on each bolt the plastic caps will have about the same number of threads showing after you screw them on.

I got the feeling that plastic piece on the bottom is used as an adapter in case the U bolt doesn't fit right. I don't remember seeing any parts list in the box, so that is just a guess. I got the Garmin OEM motorcycle mount kit off of eBay, then ordered the parts from the RAM mount wizard at RAM's website.

from your picture, appears that is what the plastic piece is for. I got the chrome bottom piece from cyclegadgets, and it fit the handlebar great. if memory serves me right, you could order it specifically for what size bar you had. would guess yours is a universal one to fit either size bar?

Yes it is the universal kit, I just used their wizard and used a 2008 model HD. It came with two U-bolts, the larger one being on the bike. I take it you just squeezed yours between the brake line and the handlebar, I had to pull out the electrical line a little bit but not too much to get the u-bolt to fit in there.

I will probably get the chrome, the black plastic just doesn't suit a bike .

The plastic piece is for smaller diameter bars.

I used the RAM mount to install my XM radio. I got the mount from Cycle Gadgets, and the install was identical to yours....and yes the plastic piece does 'favour' one side over the other. I kind of like the protection the plastic piece provides the bar so the metal U-bolt doesn't mar it.
