Default Road Glide pinging

Hello all

This is my first post and I need some advise. I have done some mods to the motor of my 05 Road Glide and have had pinging under 3000 rpms since??? The mods are as follows:

95"
S/E pistons 10.25 /1 compression
head work by RCS (local reno shop)
S&S 585 gear drive cams
power commander
Thunderheader 2-1
HP 102 TQ 104

Runs really good above 3000 rpms, but I would like to roll on throtle below 3K and not worry about the pinging. Is there anything I can do, anything I should look at changing? I did try the Andrews 55G cam but I lost a lot of TQ down low so I put the 585 back in. I have spent the money to have a custom map for the power commander. Pinging is better but still there when I get on it. Please help!!

You say custom map, does that mean you had it dyno tuned? It's all about a proper tune. If you haven't, then have it tuned by a good tuner. If that doesn't work, you may want to switch out to a different fuel management like the race tuner and have it dyno'd once you have that.

You are probably lean or have too much advance in the ignition timing at those points where you get pinging. With a SERT, you would see precisely where the pinging is and add fuel/retard timing to eliminate it.

Not sure how this is done with a PCIII, but the adjustment is the same. Simple fix is to add some fuel and ride it. If the pinging is gone, great. If it's not, return the fuel to where it was and remove 3-5* of timing.

You could also run sythetic oil, oil cooler, etc. since pinging is often just a consequence of engine temperature being a bit high. It's not uncommon on performance builds to run one map in the cooler riding season, and a different map (slightly richer/slightly retarded timing) in the hot summer months.

Good luck with your fix.

Thanks for your responses guys. Yes I had it dyno tuned by 3 different shops. The last shop built a custom map for it and it got better but is still there. I run Mobil 1 oil and change oil every 1500-2000 mls. Seems Im changing oil every other weekend...I put a lot of money into this build and dont want to cause premature failure....Im wondering if I made the wrong choice in cam at this point. My next step I guess will be to take it back to the shop that did the custom map and have them retune it. Thanks again

Don't feel like getting up and digging through my notes on a lazy Saturday night but10.25:1 compression and I believe pump gas may be causing the ping problem (if you're using). If I remember right, the 10:1 pistons I've been eye-drooling over for the XL can still run 91 octane but any higher needs more octane. Easy to try out in any case unless it snows up there!

Snow!!!! God I hope not... I run 91 octane. Should I try a fuel additive maybe? Do they actually boost the octane? There is a station here that sells 100 octane race fuel. Ill have to try it (7.99/gal). As a bagger rider I do put the miles on and finding good fuel can be tough in the small towns.

Lower your compression, or change your riding style. Low RPM roll ons done aggressively are a problem without a lot of grunt.

Guys,
His problem is the cam selection.
The 585's don't come on until 2800+ RPM
If you're going to ride under 2800 R's, you need to drop it a gear.

How do I know? See my sig.
I just pulled the 585's out of my scoot Friday night because they aren't suited to my riding style.
I installed a set of 570's.
To run the 585's in the RPM range they prefer and to utilize my 6th gear...I'd be running 82 MPH.
This just isn't how I ride.
The 570 cams should come on at about 2500 RPM, more in the range I cruise in.

The 585's are a HP cam and they just won't liven up fully until 3500 RPM.

Anybody need a set of 585's???
Buy your own gearset.
I'll let these go for $150.
PM me.

pittz,
I just put em in Friday night.
No miles yet...well, not enough to give feedback.
I'll reply to this thread later in the week.
Let everyone know what I think.
