I am thinking about purchasing an 09 street glide and this is my first Harley. If I put the wheels 21 inch wheels and other little tid bits does that void any warranty? Does it have to be done by the dealer cause I would hate to pay their rates.
Adding aftermarket parts and doing the work yourself will not void the warranty in total but it may give the dealer the ability to deny a claim if it can be proven that the accessory or work performed did in fact cause a problem you are wanting them to cover.
An example would be you added aftermarket cams and shortly afterwards your top end frags itself. Probably not a good case to get HD to cover the repair.
What about aftermarket pipes? Does that void engine warranty?
Ordinarily, no, aftermarket pipes don't void the factory warranty. When you change pipes and air intake, you will need to have the ECM (the bike's brain that controls fuel and ignition timing) recalibrated. If you don't recalibrate to richen the fuel mixture, there's a good chance the increased air moving through the engine will lean the fuel mixture to the point where you have engine damage which would not be covered by HD.
If you buy the SG, do yourself a big favor and buy the HD Service Manual, Electrical Diagnostic Manual, and Parts book for your bike. Ask to look at them at the dealership and you will get a good idea of how valuable they are.
