Default Newbie questions

Just picked up my 93 FLHTCU. Thanks to you fine folks i figured out it had a bad voltage regulator. Replaced it today and went for a brisk 45 degree ride. I trickle charged the battery all night so it would be ready. Installed the new regulator, and off i went, With the engine running for the first few miles volt gauge showed around 13-14 volts. After about 10 miles i noticed i was closer to 12 but not as low as it is with the engine off. When the key is off and engine not running gauge on dash shows 10 volts when i test the battery it is over 12 volts. what do your volt gauges read?? May i have a bad gauge or is it normal to show 13-14 volts when its cold, then drop near 12 volts when warmed up??

Thanks,
I am sure there will be many more stupid newbie questions to come!!

Connect a voltmeter to the battery, start it up and see what the volt reading is. Check it at idle and around 2000 rpm's. You should have 13 to 14 volts
