I was having a nice ride today and all of a sudden I went to shift and got a heel full of air. Has this happened to anyone else? I was able to recover the shifter but after reinstalling and tightening it, it is still loose.
Replace the bolt that you had to remove and reinstall, the threads have worn where it contacts the shaft. I had it happen to mine at around 22k. I had lost the whole shifter asm.
Ah Sheeeeeeeit... It's a Dad-gum-Harley ain't it? I had 36,000 miles on my 1999 BMW R1100RT before I sold it and think anything started to fall off? No. My 1998 FLTRI has 34,000 on it and every darn joint on the shifter has got loose. I just canned my heel shifter... since it was loose and I didn't use it. (I made a spacer .500" i.d. x .750" length.) The one to be concerned about is the one where the lever goes on the transmission shaft (yes, behind the primary) this sum-beach can't be replaced with out pulling something. Yes, you can tighten the Heck out of it without the allen screw breaking.
After owning a Dozen since 1974 they are much better scooter than they used to be! Gotta love 'em.
My buddy's almost fell off somewhere near Donner Summit in the Sierras. He had a toolkit and caught it in time to tighten it back down. I carry a variety of tools now just in case something starts to fall off, you just never know...
