On my 92 I just put a spot weld on the toe piece. Put some anti seize grease on the thread near the bolt head and it will allow you to torque the bolt tighter.

the lever that moves the shift rod fell off my 01 several times. .032 lock wire cured it.

Talking Shifter

My 2006 EGS had the toe part fall off in the parking lot at work. I found it on the ground when I went out. My toe later collapsed when riding and attempting to shift gears. Needed the heel shifter to up and down shift.
Dealer replaced no problem, no charge.
They also replaced the spline

I've had the whole assembly come undone at the inner primary side where the splined shaft attaches to vertical arm that goes up to the rod. Some nylon ties got me home or to the next stop. The bushings inside the inner primary tube part are junk: too short, just a little nylon net inside a brass ring. I dunno what you guys have on the newer ones. The junk bushings let the shaft move around too much and vibrate, which loosens up the connections. Some blue locktite on the splines helps a whole lot. I eventually pitched the OEM bushings and made a sleeve from Delrin that fit inside the primary tube and holds the shaft much tighter. Delrin has some self-lubricating properties, so that fixes it pretty well and I don't have to lube it. The shifter doesn't bounce around all the time anymore either.

Thumbs up

Another common shifter linkage failure are the shifter rod ends. I recently replace mine with Heim Joints purchased from eBay for $3.25 each.
