Question New Ultra Setup Advice

I have an '09 Ultra on order. I have been reading a lot on here and getting some good ideas (and not a few conflicting opinions) on what the bike should have on it.

Right now, I am going to have the dealer install the XM radio option and add a HD oil cooler and temp guage, so the bike is delivered in that condition and those mods are covered by warranty for sure.

I need the HD air pump for the rear shocks as well, but can't find it in the accessory catalog.

At the 1000 mile service point, I plan to switch to synthetic oil in the crankcase, primary and trans. Is that long enough for adequate break in? I have heard some discussion on whether to keep the transmission oil at the 20w-50 recommended by HD, or to go with the 70w-140 that I hear seems to work better. Opinions?

How long are tires lasting on the touring bikes? I hear the OEM '09 rear tire is supposed go longer, but longer than what?

Other than the above, I think I am going to keep it stock for at least the first year and see how everything settles out.

Any advice on these plans?

You will love the X-M radio it works great reception wise.
I was afraid of it loosing signal, but it never has.

Suspension Air Pump

This pump was designed to allow safe and simple adjustment of the front and rear air suspension on Touring motorcycles. Unlike a bicycle pump or a fuel station air hose, the hand operated pump with controllable "micro bleed" valve allows precise adjustment to air volume, and the "no loss" air connector maintains shock pressure when the fitting is removed. The 4.5" swivel air hose simplifies valve stem attachment. The aluminum housing is compact, lightweight and durable, and fits easily into your bag for "on-the-road" adjustments. The high quality 0-60 psi gauge ensures accurate air pressure.

54630-03A

For use with Touring Air Suspension components.

MSRP US $46.95

Changing to synthetic oil at the 1,000 mile break in is what I did and to be truthful it might have been better if I had waited until the 5,000 mile.

Tires I haven't a clue, I have 8,000 miles on mine and they still look really good.

Good luck on keeping it stock, all I wanted was the saddlebag spears (I'm about 10 grand later right now) LOL.

Congrats on the new bike, you will love it!

The P/N for the pump is 54630-03A. MSRP is $46.95, but you can find it cheaper online.

As for the oil, the CVO bikes come from the factory with synthetic in all three holes. Many of us switch at the 1K mark without any problems.

As for the tires, no one really knows. The older touring bikes would get from around 10K+ on the rear. Some got more, others less. It all depends on how heavy you are, what kind of road surfaces you ride on, temperature, air pressure, etc. The newer ones should last a bit longer, but I don't expect to see a huge increase. There's just not that much more surface area on the pavement, even though it is a wider tire.

Default Good luck and good choice

I traded in my '04 Ultra with 53000+ miles for an '09 in September. I have 2600 miles on it now. I don't have any mechanical add ons, but I have changed the mirrors, put on saddle bag rail lights, and some addition chrome. My dealer recommends holding off until the 5000 mile check up for synthetic which I am doing. I ran Amsoil in my '04 and was very satisfied with the performance. I believe it helped quiet down the engine/transmission noise and improved fuel efficiency. I would just buy a hand pump which you can get at the dealer, but that is person preference. The oil cooler is a good choice, I have been thinking about it but have never had one. On the tire that depends on the way you drive, the type of driving you do, and if you watch your air pressure. I usually got between 10k and 12k miles between changes. The new tires are designed for more miles but I don't know how many more. From what I have read, the center rubber is harder and the side rubber is softer for better traction while cornering.

The new Ultra is an excellent ride, smoother, better handling, and more comfortable. The only negative is the fuel ecomony is less than advertised and expected. I normally get around 38-40 mpg, my '04 got between 45 and 50 mpg.

I've only got 1,200 miles on my 2009 Ultra, but am happy with it so far.
I changed to synthetic at the 1,000 mile service.
The only changes I made to the bike was the addition of the removable tour pack.
Like you I plan on installing the oil cooler and temp gauge.
Why do we need an ambient air temp gauge?
I can put my hand out into the airstream and tell how hot or cold it is.

Tip on the XM...if you plan on doing navigation such as the Zumo, you can add xm to it for about the same money and have xm and nav!

Can I play the Zumo/XM through the speakers, or would I need a headphone system in the helmet?

Congrats on the 09. I've got Sirius, so I know you're going to love the XM. I've been running Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof in my trans for many, many years. I highly recommend it. You'll get plenty of opinions, but I've never had a problem with a gear box using Redline. And that's with at least 250,000 miles on em. Good luck and ride safe...

I had the XM added and the Navigation. The XM works great and the the Navigation is set up but I really haven't used it yet. I have about 2100 miles on mine and it runs great after changing to synthetics. I added the oil cooler and not sure if this affects the "heat" issue I have heard so much about or not but I have yet to get too much heat on this bike. My springer was hotter than this bike. I added some chrome and a few other things like the suspension air pump which is real easy to use. One thing I did add was the lighted mirrrors so cagers can see my turn signals from another perspective. I added some other items to make it more comfortable for my wife like passenger footrest that move forward and down which she really loves.

I'm sure you will like the 09 as it is extremely agile for the weight and really digs the curves. I had mine lowered front and rear and still have not scraped even with the wife on back. The 09 is just a damn fine bike this year.
