Default Difficult Windshield Replacement

I removed my stock 12" windshield on my 2009 Ultra to install the triple pouch thing. When I tried to replace the windshield I found it impossible to align the cutouts in the shield over the raised portion of the threaded inserts. I could coerce two at a time but never all three. I ended up filing the openings in the windshield a bit bigger. Is this common?

Well mine fit, but I would not let it worry you. 1/2 the mods I do require mods to get them on.

Sounds a bit odd. I change out windscreens (6", 8", 10") about once a week (with or w/o my three-pouch) depending on where I'm riding/conditions. All of my windshields have the exact same notches/cut-outs. They look to be cut to pretty exact specs.

I've found it easiest to start a few threads on each screw first, then line up the windscreen and slip each notch down to line it all up, then pop all three the rest of the way down so it sort of locks into place...then tighten (center, then outboards)

Did you try to re-install the windshield w/o the pouch before altering it? I wonder if the pouch might be bent in too steep a curve or something...pulling the inner faring back.

In any event, I don't think you will have hurt anything doing what you did. Once all three screws are tight and it has no play, you're good to ride.

jberg,
I guess you live and learn something from every bike you own. When I had my 03 Ultra and it was new I put one of those 3 pouch options on it, don't think I had any particular install problems but not going to put one on the 09 Ultra. After a few months of the pouches vibrating against the windshield, I hated the way it looked as it really rubbed the inside of the ws. My suggestion would be to put something of a protecting nature between the bags and the WS. Also, one time on a trip I was covered up with love bugs and took one of those gas station squegie scubbers to the love bugs, never do this as it will screw a windshiel up, left long scratches all the way across the windshield, oh well new windshield with bag removal just like new. Like I said you live and learn.
