Hi all. I got a used 02 ultra at the start of this riding season. It has around 40,000 miles now. I have done a few upgrades. New radio, Screamin eagle air cleaner, python slip ons and a powercommander IIIr. It was an old one that was with the bike so I used it still. I also put the trusac type true duals on and had it dyno tuned. I originally started doing all this due to heat from the rear cylinder. The power commander wasn't on the bike when I got it but should have been. The high flow air cleaner was on it. I am still having the issue with heat of the rear cylinder. Not as bad as before but still real hot to me. I can't ride it when the temp is above 70 with the lowers on. The rear exhaust pipe will glow red when I park it after ridin. Now I have noticed that there is a small amount of oil leakin from the top of the rear cylinder. My though is somethin musta got to hot before the tuning was done and damaged somethin. I am thinking of getting 97 ci top end, some head work, and new cams. I will try to do it myself I think. I have back up in case I get stumped and the manual. I hope this fixes my problem. Any suggestion on cams?. The jugs are going to be axtell. I will probably have to get a new power commander too. I figured I would just go with fuelmoto for that. Everyone here has had good experience with them. Am I crazy for tryin to do this all myself? I figure I got all winter here in Ohio so what the hell. I just want it cooler so that I can leave the lowers on if I want plus I really feel that after all the stuff I did to try to cool it it should be a little more tolerable. Any suggestions would be appreciated
You're not crazy for doing it yourself, you're smart. For cams you should check your runout and if within limits I would consider gear drive like Andrews 26g or a Woods or HQ cam. If you're out beyond .003 I would consider doing the roller chain conversion.
I have an 06 RK,Stage one with SE Tuner. Bike ran real hot when stock,
but tuner cured the problem. Glowing red pipes are not normal,to much heat.
Lots of different motor builds out there, pick one that works for your riding style.
I'am going with 100" S&S complete top end kit, barrels, heads, low to mid range
cams and compression under 10.
I was going to do the gear drive too. I didn't see that I didn't put it in there. I was looking at a nrhs to do some head work unless I can find someone around me that has a good reputation. Just started looking around here for someone. If anyone knows someone around the cleveland area let me know I was just looking at the shop manual and now I am getting kind of excited. I don't need a total beast but maybe son of beast
