HoosierHog is correct and the number above is the tech tip for valve seals updates for P/N 18904-02 (identified by black seal with silver spring) that can cause leakage between the guide and seal if side-loaded or misinstalled and change to P/N 18094-02A (identified by green seal and, according to the tip, orange later for easy identification). It did not spark a recall since every seal did not fail but change was made due to numerous customer complaints and replacement valve sets were chargeable under warranty when bikes developed leakage. While a 2005, even if they considered outside the regular warranty unless you have the extended three-year plan, they could have DEFINITELY done a "good faith" repair (can't find the exact phrase in my notes) which is a dealer allocation for such instances to repair knowing that these seals had a problem. I won't go so far to say the service writer was lying but perhaps ignorant of the valve seal problem but should have found this information at the same site they have access to. According to the tip, normal engine oil consumption is approximately 1 quart per 1500 miles so yours was not outside the realm of normal consumption, however, the prescence of oil on the intake valves is an indicator of a leaking seal esp. if a leakdown test revealed seal breakdown. If they still won't do the repair, even after providing the TT#, find another dealer; that one has a service manager only worried about his department image! PS: manufacture date can be found on the sticker by the VIN on the steering head.

I had the same problem, 1 qt. per 1500 miles. All of mine was going through the rear cylinder. Since it was on my dime I replaced the valve guide seals on the rear cylinder only. That was over 10,000 miles ago and no more oil consumption. I went to two different dealers. 1st one told me that HD wouldn't do anything since that amount was normal. 2nd was like your dealer. Didn't know of any such problem. Offered to do a complete top end for around $1000. Went to indy for my repair.

Ask your dealer to show you TSB dated August 10, 2005.

Ditto for me on my roadking fixed by dealer for free

Had the same problem on my 05. Took awhile for the dealer to admit excessive oil consumption. While they had the heads off for warranty repair, I had them do the 95 inch upgrade, the MoCo ate the labor under warranty, I paid for the hardware. What a savings. First and last time the dealer every did anything goooood for me... 12k miles since, and no oil consumption problems.
