I don't want anything too loud, but something "heartier" than stock. My friend has a RK, and I believe he has a set of Rush slip-on (for some reason, he didn't remember what kind of pipes they were). In any case, I really liked the sound, but again, not exactly sure what they are.
So, any recommendations for a little more volume, but not so much as to **** off the neighbors and set off car alarms?
Go with the Jackpot's or Rush's from Fuelmoto with the Custom Baffles. You will be extremely happy, I waited and read and read then bit the bullet last month. Was looking for exactly what you where and this fit the bill perfectly. The performance gain is worth it also.
I have a stock '99 FLHR with stock headpipes and a SE AC. I am running the HD SE 65115-98B mufflers that were discontinued in '06 due to the EPA. Great Harley sound with deep bass tone but very livable when touring or sneaking through the neighborhood. Will roar when you hit it hard but quiet out when cruising. They are one of the favorites for sound on this board. They also produce good TQ and HP for just mufflers.
I know they are discontinued but you can find them quite easily on this board or eBay. Also, SuperTrapp (Kerker) who made them for HD sells the same muff as the "SE", so you can still get them. www.supertrapp.com
Monster Ovals are not too loud. Saw someone on this site that did a pipe comparison and it was:
1. stock
2. SE's
3. Monster Ovals
I think it is pretty accurate. I put the MO's on my bike and am thinking of going louder.
It's not that I don't like them, although I do find them to be a "tad" louder then I expected they would be. (I suspect too loud for anyone interested in serious touring)
Monster Ovals were nice but would require an EFI modification (such as a FuelPak or Power Commander) because they are causing a factory "lean" bike to run even leaner. That's not a good situation and aside from extra heat, could cause damage to the motor too. They do have pretty big free flowing baffles in them, over 2" in diameter.
I don't want to modify my EFI or ECM in any way because it voids the H-D factory warranty and rumor is that H-D is starting to inforce that once they detect any EFI modification. I purchased a 7 year full factory warranty and don't want to jeopardize that in any way and thus I will keep the EFI and motor stock. I can live with the factory mufflers as they really are not bad at all.
(I've been getting asked this quite often now, so I just copy and past it into PMs and threads as the question comes up.)
