First the MPG the PC3 tends to run on the rich side with the preloaded maps getting it set up (Dyno) would help with that ,get someone who is familiar with the unit or you can do it yourself if your handy with a computer and the tables in the Map section as for the constant running fuel pump the early 08s had a problem with the fuel filter cover cracking and what would happen is you would first hear the pump running excessively in the tank more like a hissing noise easy fix under warranty but if its whining it could be the pump and for the smell of gas after a ride there is a vent line that runs along the frame that exits on the left side by the side cover to the bottom of the bike and if you fill to the max it will drip out from there after you stop the bike

Check the 02 Sensors. If you have had this problem since you purchased the bike I would start there. Sounds like they are reading that the bike is lean and it is trying to dump more fuel into it. Also as someone else mentioned smell the oil to be sure it is not "washing the cylinders". Lastly pull the plugs to see if one looks significantly darker than the other. That would be an indication of which sensor is bad.

Never thought about that but when I do makes sense ...

Yup.
I was thinking fuel pump issue, too.
Like a carb, sounds like the choke is still on.

+1. I had the same problem with my "08" ultra. The fuel pump would not shut off. After having the recall taken care of, the problem went away. The pump works fine now,and I have noticed a little better gas milage but mostly, I have noticed that it seems to run stronger and smoother. Seems as though it may have been starving for fuel before it was repaired.

First, Fuel Moto's maps tend to favor performance and cooling over mileage, and in my opinion he goes a bit too rich in the cruise range. I've tweaked my map using FM's base map for the Jackpot mufflers and mileage has improved greatly, between 38-50mpg depending on conditions. City riding with many cold starts is lowest, moderate speeds on the backroads the highest.

If you are knowledgeable of the PCIII software and can change map values, I can send you info that will likely improve your mileage. Let me know here or via email or PM. Or, send me your map via email and I'll make the changes for you. There are some caveats and I will lay those out if you want to make the changes. If you ask Jamie for his map tweaked for mileage you'll get leaner settings in the cruise range, but not as lean as I run them.

What concerns me is the gas odors you describe. Is the odor coming from the pipes? Other than when first started do you see black smoke exit the exhaust? Have a fellow rider follow you and watch. Also, check your spark plugs for an overly rich mixture. Your mileage is awful, and you should be getting at least 42mpg when riding at moderate speeds with little starting and stopping, even with Jamie's map installed.

Put it back to stock. It'll run fine and get great gas mileage.

Not trying to be a smart a$$ here but gee, do you think it might be a little rich? Don't bother with O2 sensors since the PCIII doesn't use them and remember the fuel pump runs the entire time the motor is running for obvious reasons. When you turn the switch on the pump runs up to pressure for starting and then stops and should never flood the engine because excess fuel always returns to tank by means of a bypass valve and return line. The cheap fix is to contact Fuelmoto and make their recommended changes. If that fails locate a GOOD dyno tuner and have it custom mapped - money well spent. Also have that fuel pump checked out by the dealer, sure doesn't sound right.

Ok, smelled my oil...it is synthetic but it has a slightly gassy smell and I am unaware of what synthetic should smell like (I will have the stealership double check this). Pulled my plugs and they do not look fouled. Also found out that my fuel pump has been recalled, but that my stelership will not have the parts for 1 month...so that will have to wait.

Finally contacted FuelMoto today and Jamie is sending me a new map. I will try it out for a while and update again. Depending on how the new fuel pump and map works, I might contact member iClick and check into his recommendations. Wait and see game at this point. Thanks for all the continuing advice!
