Has anyone figured out the stock set up on these bikes How lean they are?
And would you definetly recommend a tuner regardless just to change the epa
mandated crap.
I usually add a stage 1 kit on a new bike, but haven't done so yet, I'm curious how lean they
actual are ?
I pulled my plugs to check the color. I was expecting whiter coloring but they were fairly dark. The bike still pings when it gets hot though, so I'll do the sert/stage one.
The EPA mandates them to maintain 14.7:1 a/f during closed loop operation.
Actually, the EPA mandates emissions levels and they leave it up to the manufacturer as to how to achieve those levels. If Harley could do it at 13.0:1, you better believe they would.
That being said, I had an e-mail exchange with Steve at Nightrider on this very subject since I'm about to pull the trigger on an 09 Dyna. He said the 09 TC96s are coming from the factory a littler richer than they did in 07 and 08, so maybe Harley finally realized that they didn't have to run so lean and still meet the EPA standards.
I can't really give you a number, if that's what you are looking for, but I can tell you this. I put a stage 1 on my 09, Python slip ons, air filter, factory download, and it runs great. I have ridden in 95 plus heat, 6000 foot elevation changes, and strong head winds, and the bike doesn't ping, knock, or rattle and I actually got 49 mpg out of one tank.
