Default VH Fuel Pak Problem?

Hi folks. New here. This may have been discussed before, but I'm not up to the search thing at this point, so pardon me if I ask.

A dealer told me that they had had problems with the Fuel Pak, but didn't elaborate. Of course, he suggested the SERT for my 07 RK. Seems to me that the Fuel Pak is a good product if all you wanna do is put on slip-ons, a breather, and that's all. I'm not after gobs of power. I'm ok with the motor the way it is, until it's time to rebuild, if I live that long (almost 59 now). It's only got around 7000 miles on it now, still stock. I just want a better sound and for the thing to breathe like it oughta, and to NOT run lean.

Any opinions? Is the Fuel Pak a problem? Thanks in advance.

Fuel pak works fine as long as you run there exhaust. You can run a different manufacturer but it seems as though V&H works better. If it were me and I had the fuel pak for a while i would spend another $75 and get a PC III from Jamie at fuel moto. Money well spent. This way if you do decide to put in cams or big bore he will let you know what the map will be. Fuel pak is another story in getting info on there mapping. He also has the a/c and exhaust that sounds really good. I am thinking of trading out my V&H ovals. Good luck ride safe

Thanks for that, HB. I was wondering if VH slip-ons would be best with the Fuel Pak. I don't know what the dealer's problems were, but there was an employee there that ran the Fuel Pak with SE slip-ons on an 07 EG who said it seemed to work ok for him. Like I said, all I'm interested in is keeping the fuel/air ratio from being too lean. I think the dealer also put down the PC, of course, being the HD dealer. I just don't see why I need the SERT for no more than I require of the engine. Trying to keep it simple here so I can just roll along.

I did exactly what you are suggesting (V&H FuelPak, SE Air cleaner and V&H Ovals) on my 07 RK and was very happy with the combination. Later, when I had the Stage II kit installed by the dealership, the mechanic told me emphatically that the Fuelpak would not work and that V&H did not recommend it. I told the mechanic that V&H did recommend it and in fact that they had the settings for the Stage II setup on their website. The mechanic told me that I was wrong. We agreed that he would install the Stage II kit and that he would use the FuelPak settings I provided to him (off the website). I agreed if the bike ran badly that he could install his recommended tuner and dyno as necessary. When I went to pick up my bike, the mechanic admitted that I was right and that the bike ran perfectly. It's been running great since then too.

I think the dealerships prefer the other tuners because of the labor they get for the dyno time. I'm not interested in squeaking out the last 5% of hp and torque.

Me neither, Andy. Just want it to run safe and properly. Glad to hear of someone who actually did what I was thinking about. And that it worked.

HB: I will probably talk to fuel moto, too, just to see what they have to say. I know the PC III is a good unit.

There are even those who say that the ECM will compensate for most slip-ons AND a breather, and one guy reported that when he checked the air/fuel ratio on his stock 07 that, lo and behold, it was 14.7 to 1, the theoretical ideal. But he didn't say at what rpm and load--or heat range. It's all confusing and suspect. All I know is that it's not uncommon for me to see 240-degrees and more on my dipstick thermometer (however accurate that thing is). And you know it's higher inside the motor.

Glad I joined this forum to talk about it. Thanks to all who reply.

Ride safe, guys.

RussL,

Just be sure that you use the exact components listed on the V&H website. Deviations from their list may cause problems. The V&H Ovals are excellent slip-ons, but they are a tad expensive...and worth it!!

I have fuel pack, vh true dual headers, and thunderheader mufflers, with K&N 3910 AC. I've put nearly 40K miles on this setup with no problems at all. During trips I get between 43 to 47 mpg with a full load (luggage and wife). I can't complain about the setup... the bike runs perfectly and I didn't have to do any tweaking to the fuel pack.

Good luck, Scary

The Fuelpak seems to work great for me with the V&H Big Radius 2-1 and SE A/C.
I think the dealer wants to sell you the SERT to make more cash and also have you back as a repeat customer for remapping. (You can remap the Fuelpak yourself.)

Good to hear others having success with the Fuel Pak. I wonder how it would do with Rhinehart slip-ons? Maybe the V&H pipes would do best, but the Rhineharts are some that I KNOW I like the sound of. Then again, I believe V&H has a simple slant-cut set without end caps that might sound good, but I haven't heard them. Looking for the deep sound without much "clap."

Otherwise, the fuel management issue has been driving me nuts. I know the Fuel Pak isn't the only plug-n-play device of its kind on the market, but it's the first one I ran up on. What the dealer said made it stand out in my mind, so I wanted to investigate it further in case there was something wrong with any of them.

Sheesh, I gotta get to bed, but I'll be back. Thanks guys.
