I am very close to completion on my 88 Electra glide classic. lots of cash & time in her now & when it rolls out the garage door, i want it rollin all summer with no down time. I was lookin at it today & I decided it might look better without the top bag behind the passenger seat. I was going to unbolt it, cut the brake light wiring etc & I thought it might be a good idea to get some opinions from the forum first.
I think it would have a better body line but am I gona be left with a whack of bolt holes & an unfinished lookin bike??? Wadda you think??
I'm thinking you mean the Tourpac? Not sure if you would be able to make it detachable like on the 96 and newer bikes, that would be the way to go if you can.
You can make it detachable, you just need to find the right rack. I had a detach kit for a tourpak on my 94 RK, and that had the same frame as your 88 does.
In fact, the mounts for the frame are the same as the 'newer' style sold for the 08, I just installed the tourpak on my 08 FLHX.
My brother had an 97 RK, and that was the newer frame and my tourpak fit fine, we just needed to slide one mount forward into the next alignment hole. Check with a good parts guy, but I bet you can still buy the rack and mount up the detachable mounts
There are detachable kits out there, but they are hard to find. I lucked out and after 4 months of having six different searches going on E-Bay I found one. The detachable tour pack mount is the hard peice, I think the same piece fits from the middle eighties to the middle nineties. The front and rear detachment points are still available from Harley. If you have the Harley tour book/map and free long distance you can start calling the deajers in your state and work out from there. Thats how I found the rubber grommetts for my fairing. I had the local dealer do a search on the Harley parts finding net and they said no one had them. Another dealer informed me that not all the dealers are on that and suggested the phone route. I lucked out the third dealer I called had them. Hope this helps.
