Default Service

I firmly believe I think that the first 10,000 miles should be serviced by the dealer. There is an exception. The exception is if your service to get over 10,000 miles takes more than a year. Then do it yourself.

Wow, next time tell them to kiss you first before they screw you. My dealer charges $200 total and does a great job, doesn't miss a thing....... I Had them do mine at 1k because I was there for something else anyway. I usually do all my own.

Default What to use

Amsoil has a Harley Davidson chart of what to use. It says the best is 20W-50 in all three holes. What are you guys using in the Trany and Primary? I want to start doing my own servicing. Ordered the service manual but would like to know what your experience is in using.

Engine: Any high-quality synthetic 15w50, 20w50, or 20w60 (e.g., Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, etc.). It does not need to be motorcycle-specific.

Tranny: 75w90 for 5-speeds or 85w140+ for 6-speeds, preferably synthetic.

Primary: Any inexpensive 10w40-20w50 fossil engine oil or ATF. Avoid high-efficiency motor oils (usually low-viscosity) with high levels of friction modifiers.

I was given a slip from the dealer when I bought my bike that the 1,000 mile service would be no more than $350, as long as I brought the slip back with me. Hmmm, I think I am going to be doing that one myself!
