The important issue when doing your own maintenance and not voiding your warranty is to keep good records and receipts. And like others have stated, buy the service manual.

BTW ... I have a the 2007 Harley-Davidson Service Manual, #99483-07 that I'll sell for $30 + $5 shipping (unless you're a local, we can arrange to meet and I'll hand over the goods!). Good condition, just used a few times. That's about 1/2 the cost of a new one, it's in mint condition. Please PM me if you're interested, payment accepted thru paypal.

SOLD.

Default overpriced oil change...

...I drank the kool-aid at 1000 miles and 2500 miles. Both were just a tad over $200.00 w/syn. oil. Doing my own until I hit the multiples of 10 from here on out.

Someone will have to chime in on the law/act that forbids voiding warranties from the "Dealer" not providing the service intervals. I just cannot remember what is.

Believe that would be the Magnusson-Moss Act. It states that a manufacturer cannot require specific products or services to maintain warranty coverage unless they provide same free of charge. And the burden of proof is on the warranty provider, not the consumer. If you have a warranty claim, the manufacturer must prove that the failure was caused by the specific product or service not provided by the manufacturer.

I dropped my Road King Classic off at HD Collierville today for the 1k. Part of the purchase deal.

On the way on rt64 I heard dink-dink-clunk-crash. Oh no! As I rode I looked all over the bike and saw nothing missing. Next time I went to heel-shift though... there was nothing to shift. Sure 'nuf, the shifter arm had come loose and fallen off on a four lane. Doubled back and found the now beat up arm. I'll get a new one, warranty.

I asked service the warranty question. I really pushed for definitive answers, I had to. He wasn't anxious to be in the conversation. He said HD would honor user-done work so long as we have receipts and accurate, detailed logs but warned I'd (we'd) better know each and every requirement of a given service. 1k, 5k, 10k etc. If it could be proven that a detail was skipped or done incorrectly, no warranty.

Now does that mean HD would 'try' to prove it? I don't know. Would assume it'd depend on what dealer you're at and on what day.

Example - On the 5k (I think) they check spokes for torque. That's just one example. It'll be interesting what the service manual says is required for the different services.

Aaaanyway, I'll get her back in about 5 days... sheese. Keep thinking 'free'.

You guys can go the labor free way but I will continue to have the dealer do my service until 2 yrs is up. That way there will be no doubt if a warranty issue arises. I can't afford to drop several thousand at one time because I didn't torque a spoke or etc. A few hundred every so thousand miles fits better into my budget.

Thanks for the info RKC! Thats what I had been told (beating around the bush) before at Southern Thunder.

Question Where oh where

Where would you find the specifics to each service interval? In example, the full details pertaining to a 2k or 5k etc service. What if you don't have a manual? Yes I know, I should go buy one, but what if I cant afford one at this time? Is this information on a site perhaps somewhere?
