Why I like Texas -- Especially in Winter
You ride for 200 miles on dead straight road, followed by another 200 miles of dead straight road, and if you get on it you will get arrested and go to jail. The cops everywhere down there.
Yes, you can ride, but....how boring is that.
I'm dreaming of the Rocky Mt, Black Hills, Chief Joseph....etc
You can have Texas, thanks for the post.
You've been to Midland/Odessa haven't you. Those roads will definitly put you to sleep, they're spooky straight. Especially after some of the best people on the planet cook you up some of the best BBQ on the planet.

I guess you've only been to or heard of West Texas. Have you ever heard of the Hill Country or the 3 Twisted Sisters? What about Big Bend, the Gulf Coast or East Texas? There's lots of great riding in Texas. Even West Texas has got to be better than riding in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa.... It's Texas, after all!
I have been through Texas, top to bottom. East to West. Best part was about Junction Texas, the speed limit was 85 MPH and some nice roads. After that, heading North to Lubbock.....yup, boring !
Sorry, but that is the FACT and watch out for COPS they make all their $'s on travelers going 1 MPH over the limit !
Can you still drink in a bar in Texas, or, will you get arrested for drinking IN A BAR ?
Yes, I've ridden in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arkansas, the Smokies, etc... And if I had both the time and ability to get to those for a day ride, I'd do it. But living in Houston has its limitations. (However, winter isn't one of them!) And while I'd like to get to the Hill Country or Big Bend, it isn't a day trip for lunch.
Sooo, having said that -- the trip was a good one, with some great winding roads on the way (you have to know where to look) and if you are in the Houston area and want to take the route I did, go to www.hog.com and go to the Ride Planner and search for my Houston to Austin Salt Lick BBQ run. It is posted as a public ride.
Sure, it was 42 degrees when we started at 7:30 a.m., but there wasn't a cloud in the sky. It warmed up to the mid-60's by the time we got to Austin about 12:35, and remained beautiful all day, with a drop back to 54 degrees by the time we hit home about 6:45. So almost a full 12 hour day, and we logged 489 miles. We had great roads and good food, and made good deposits in the memory banks... Riding in Texas in December beats wishing about it anywhere else...)
The remedy for you is: Stay away!

I notice your not too proud to put up where your from.
You havnt seen Texas if your whinning about straight roads. You may have driven through a stright road and we are all sorry for you

Really.

I have never been stopped by a cop in Texas while riding. Of course, I have only been riding in Texas since 1964.
And yes Bf1, I have also been drinking in bars in Texas since 1964. You must have got off the Interstate in one of the few dry counties here.
tphillips. Sounds like you guys had a great ride and a good day. I was only kidding about continuing on through the hill country.

BTW, with the number of Texans replying on this thread, we ought to plan for a GTG in a good area for riding -- maybe out your way or Kerrville area... Just a thought for the organizers among us...
