I almost never have the TP on the bike and when I do, I've used the HD solo and two-up detachable racks at various times. I'm going to bite the proverbial bullet and buy the Milwaukee Bagger TP rack that uses the passenger backrest/solo detachable TP mounting hardware because I dislike the HD chrome tubes sticking out the back of the bike that the two-up HD rack uses.
As Wally mentioned, the bike handles more nimbly without the TP on the back, and, IMO, looks better also. But that's a very personal opinion and I know a lot of HDF'ers leave the TP on the bike almost 100% of the time even after buying the detachable rack and hardware.
The HD docking hardware for the detachable passenger backrest and the tourpack are not the same. Different locations and different size/style.
It takes two different kits to be able to use both.
Then why is it that I can do it with mine? I had a detachable passenger backrest, took it off, put the tourpack on---end of story. My only thinking is that it's because mine's an '09 RKC.
Got detach on my 05 FLHT, love it. Love the tour pack, but love not having to have it when I want the bike to look a little meaner. With 2 different seats and windshields , it's like having a street glide or a classic. In the long run it may save me money by not getting bored and buying another one.
Although I leave my Tour-Pak on most of the time, I like the ability to take it off for cleaning the bike and the flexibility if gives me for various racks and backrests.
No tubes on the newer detachable tour pack mounts, thats the old type mount, new one looks like Pastor Johns, chromed flat steel Buck Naked sounds like you might have the older tube type mount
Just an FYI
HD solo tour pak mount works with the passenger backrest mounts, the two up tour pak mounts, need the additional tour pak mounting hardware on the bike. Of course this does not include the 09's

Negative. The mount itself is a brand new for an '09 (bike is an '09 RKC). When I first bought the bike, I bought a quick detach backrest and q/d luggage rack, and the hardware all brand new. The only thing I bought used was the leather tour pack, then got the tour pack mount ordered new for Christmas. I mounted the tourpack on the quick detach mount, then mounted it right up on the bike...no fittment issues at all. Just lucky, I guess!!
