I'd still be a member of a local chapter, but Uncle Sam moved me again and the local chapter here has meetings on Tuesday's at 7pm. Just doesn't make much sense to me.
We ended up finding our own inner riding group (mostly the hand raisers) within the chapter where we can do our own thing. We trust and know each others riding abilities and it's actually not "grounds for dismissal" to have an occasional beer with lunch.
Very simular to why about 5 of us left and started our own thing. HOG is great if you like to showoff 1 or 2 days a month and thats all you have time to be a "Biker". If you ride as often as we do, HOG doesn't really work.
Our chapter is a riding chapter first, with emphasis on safety and food! The chapter rides once a month sanctioned (and once a month for Ladies of Harley).
We will also be the hosting chapter in 2009 for the Indiana State HD Rally. Three days of great riding in Southern Indiana and then lots of fun afterwards.
Regarding comments about drinking. While we ride on the chapter sanctioned miles, the HD insurance covers us. It requires no drinking. When we reach our destination which is usually 100 plus miles away at a eating place, the leader officially calls the ride finished and we can do what we want there and on the ride home.
The friendship of the people and the dealership is great, but just one of the many activities in which I engage with my bike. Four other members of my family ride...all metrics...so we cut our own path aside from the Chapter.
BTW, at the end of the year we take dozens of presents to children in local hospitals, purchased with the money we collected from raffles, the annual dealership appreciation day, etc. All this for a $15 annual fee to the local chapter.
Balance the H.O.G. experience with others and its just one more part of the great riding experience.
National member only. Five others in my family also national only members. The local HOG chapter members we meet around town and at events are great people who always seem to have a good time. I just don't have time to do the meeting stuff. Chapter membership may not be for everyone but I certainly won't knock it because I haven't tried it.
When my freebie membership ended never renewed.
Going on two years now don't see the need or haven't needed whatever they have to offer.
I've been in many dealerships around the country and so far none offer any discounts but I hear there are a few............ somewhere.
My wife and I have been members of both for years, or chapter does a lot of fun stuff and they help a lot of people and I do like the 10% discount coupon they give us every month for more parts.
