A lot of the decision is based on the type of riding you are going to do, as well as the upgrades you want. I had a hard time between the Road King and the Heritage Soft Tail, then I found my bike. I had never looked twice at the Street Glides or had ever ridden one before, but it was love at first site. After I rode it...I thought I died and when to Harley Heaven. Bought it right then and never looked back. Of course it is not your typical Street Glide.
Rent em...ride em...decide what feels the best to you, and think about the kind of upgrades you want...then the decisions all yours my friend...Good Luck
I felt that the RK with the stock windshield provided better wind protection than the SG I test rode. Much less buffeting, at least for me at 5'7''. I usually ride superslab at 70 mph or so, sometimes a bit higher depending on traffic.
Now this is true. I just came off of an '05 Electra Glide Classic that was pretty much stripped down to a Street Glide configuration. I had a lower windshield on it (but it wasn't as low as a SG comes equipped with) and can tell you that my current RK with standard windshield gives about the same or better wind protection than the EG did with a lower windshield on it. It follows that the tiny windscreen of the SG will give more wind to the rider. That's not a problem generally unless you're really trying to avoid wind, but if you are then a SG will look a bit funny with a tall windshield.
I ride the freeways all the time here in So Cal and the RK at 80 mph is no different than my EG was the way I had it set up. The hands get more exposure of course than a bike with a batwing, but that's not too big of an issue to me.

Matter of opinion I guess, I personally feel the RK looks funny with the windshield, they look much better without. On a recent ride with a friend that has a RK, he ended up taking off the shield and leaving it at a gas station to pick up on the way back, he said it was buffeting so bad he couldn't stand it.
Rent em...Ride em...Then decide.

I traded an 08' SG in for an 09' RKC. Both gre great bikes. I personally just like the looks of non-fairing. The only thing I miss is the tunes. Bar mounted speaker can't compair. Regarding wind buffing, I've noticed no difference between the two.
You can alway make a RK inro a SG but you can make a SG into a RK.
While the RK is a nice bike, I'd never go back to one after owning my SG. I like the fairing and the benefits it affords (better protection from the elements once 4" shield is changed out, radio, instrument panel, etc).
