Default 4 ohm speakers causing code??

When the dealer did my motor upgrade they enabled that thinga mabob that makes the back cyclinder cut out. So I rode to the dealer this morning and had them remove it, which they did for free while I waited. When the bike was finished the service writer came and found me while I was looking at all the accessories in their store with glazed over eyes and drool.

The service writer told me I had a code that was triggered because of having 4 ohm speakers instead of 2 ohm speakers. He said not to worry about it and they cleared the code but asked me to remember and tell who ever works on the bike in the future so they know why the code appears.

First of all, are the speakers somehow tied in to the self diagnostic system?? I was skeptical and thought he was going to try to sell me something but he didn't.

And second, can I have any codes stored without the check light coming on?? The light has never come on.

I dont know, just thought this was weird!

I cannot see how a 4ohm speaker would cause anything worng with the head unit. Unless it was either hooked up and a dead short occured. OE on yours is 2ohm, thus a 4ohm is making the radio work less not harder. It is true the ECM can store codes and not trip a MIL light. Reason a MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) would be tripped is that a problem occured more than a predetermined amount, ie more than once in a cycle. If the event happened once then the computer would make note of it and store it in the ecm. Newer cars do this quite often. Usually if the problem does not happen in a certain amount of on/off then it clears itself.

With the ARC set up in your sig.,I dont see how the ECM can detect this.
The speaker wires from the head unit go directly to the amp then to the speakers.
Has anyone else that installed the ARC amp or another brand had codes like this?
I have the same set up with no problems.
Maybe Firecap could chime in.

Hey

The radio looks for the 2 ohm speaker load directly on its speaker wires. With any amp present, the radio speaker wires send input signal to the amplifier, and the amp powers the speakers. The amplifier is now what "sees" the load-the radio sees nothing, so a code is created as the bikes ECM "assumes" the speakers are blown or as the bike says "open"

I have seen this with the HD Screamin Eagle amp as well.--PEZ

Hi

98-05 were a 8 ohm design. In 06, HD went to the HK system which is a 2 ohm speaker.

If you put an 8 ohm speaker on the HK radio--everything wil work fine as the 8 ohm load is very "light" compared to the 2 ohm speaker. The only downside is the light load sen by the radio will yield 1/3 the power (on paper)

If you use a 2 ohm speaker on the 98-05 radio--it will perform very bad, and blow fuses or damage the radio

Default how about 4 ohm

pez I had a 2003 classic and took out the hd speakers and out in a set of jl audio speakers-- they sounded great. I hadnt heard about your hogutunes until a few months ago, dealer had a hogtunes displayy set up. I kept my jl's when I traded the 03 in. I noticed I had to turn the volume up a bit higher to get roughly the same db ouput, but they sounded a lot better and didnt distort when really cranked up. I now have a 2009 and now am wondering after seeing this code thread wheather to put the same speakers into my new bike or shell out money for your hogtune set up. these were about 150 bucks for the jl speakers. Is there a chance I'll have the code problem like the tread starter had. any info on bluetooth set ups for 2009 model you may have. hd doesnt seel the bluetooth option any more and I had located one at a dealer in florida but the 500 clam pricetag is way too high. plus a possible wiring harness change
