Default Break-In Question

After the 500 mile break-in can I change to a synthetic 20w/50 engine oil?
Or is that to soon to switch?

Thanks,
magnoliarunner

Ask the dealer for sure.. Don't want anything to void your warranty.

This is one of those topics that never has a happy ending. Here is what I know:
It doesn't hurt the engine to keep using non synthetic oil past 1000 miles.
It doesn't help an engine to use synthetic up to 1000 miles.
Engine break typically goes on past 2000 miles.

Good luck

Change at 500 to Castrol GTX or other good fossil 20w50, then change again at 2k to your synthetic of choice. Changing to syn at 500 likely won't hurt anything, but fossil oil should speed ring seating, which in fact ought to occur in the first 100 miles.

You should ask your service department. One of the dealers by me installs Synth 3 on the bikes they service at the 1st 1000 mile service. I did my first 1000 mi oil change last week and used regular Harley 20-50 oil. Next time I plan on using one of the synthetics (Amsoil, Redline or Mobil 1).

You can change it when ever you like. There is absolutely no reason to wait for any certain mileage to put in synthetic oil. Some New cars come out of the factory with syn. in them. And I believe CVO bikes do too.

Do whatever you want, it's your money. Really you should just wait for the 1000 mile because you're throwing away money before that. You will continue to get metal particles in your oil well past 1000 miles but that's why there is a magnet on the drain plug. Oil is good these days for 12-15,000 miles and is only changed according to the mfg. specs for warranty fears.

This has been discussed numerous times. You can go to Synthetic oil anytime you want. No warrany issues at all. No engine consequences either. Sooner the better as far as I am concerned. That said, Dyno oil is fine as well. Just change it accordingly. I use syn oil because it runs cooler and goes longer between changes. Take care of your ride with either as required and you will be fine. I just hate the heat the new bikes put off. Syn really helped with that.

I am sure that its not going to hurt anything, but I waited till I had almost 900 miles on mine for the first change. The oil was very clean at 900 miles. Probably just wasting your money on the change, but if it makes you sleep better, go for it.

Tire is tire, Gas is gas and Oil is oil. Nothing in particular to be afraid of. However, It will run cooler for your money's worth. Keep an eye on the fluidity level and baby the bike to ensure it's longevity life to the max.

Been there, Done that...
