detachable windshield
If I lived in that area, I would consider a bike with the batwing.
I had a quick detach shield on my last bike. It was the type that all you had to do was pull on it to take it off. I rode over 26K miles with several cross country trips in all sorts of weather and never had a problem.

Last year I was motoring down I-5 to San Diego from Oregon, first stop was Redding. The next morning the forecast was 40 mph winds, lucky for me it was a tail wind, I got 50+ mpg going 85 MPH.
When I stopped for lunch at some dive, I dropped the kick stand, got off and watched my wind shield almost get blown off my bike. I moved the bike next to some bushes for better shelter and had no issues after that.
That tail wind was the bomb - very little turbulence and I spent almost 3 hours in the saddle before stopping for gas. Needless to say, I was happy I wasn't riding north.

Yes, happened to my brother on his RK this past Nov. We were down visiting them, rode to Kitty Hawk in the Outer Banks to visit the Wright Bros Museum, and in the parking lot, a gust caught his windshield and blew it across the lot. Everything was ok, a few light scratches, but we sure found out (the hard way) why they chose that area to make the first airplane flight!!
