When the blues are behind you that is to fast.

As far as the six speed It dose make a the bike quiet down I don't think you will kill your engine with the five speed.

I have an 01 FLHPI and 75 to 80 MPH seems to be a good cruising speed. The RPM is a little over 3000 and the engine sounds good. If I ever have to replace the transmission I'll consider the Baker 6 speed but only as a luxury not a necessity

A 2003 doesn't rev as high as my 2000 due to the gearing difference. I'd guess I have put 25k+ of my miles on at 75+ mph. At 73k miles, my bike still runs like new......Don't worry about it.

I do a lot more reading than posting. From what I have read by those that know a lot more than I the 6 speed is an over kill for a 88 ci. Even with a baker (lots of $$$) It will strain a 88 engine. Look at how many guys complain about 6th on a 96 ci. I just changed cams for that very reason. An 95 ci up grade is a different story.

Now on the subject on hand. I would think the engine will be fine as long as you keep you maintenance in order. 3,000 -3,500 rpm isn't that much when you think about it.
I like to stay below 3,000 for mpg reasons. My 96ci Ultra is turning 2,850 rpms at 80

186,001 Miles/Second! Heh heh.

Seriously though, 3500 RPM won't hurt your motor a bit. Just keep an eye on your cam chain tensioners though, no matter what speeds you ride. If you go too long and they come apart, they can make a real me$$!

Stay safe,

John

A 6 speed will allow you to run 500 rpm less in 6th gear only.
