I am putting a heel shifter back on my bike and I am wondering if I am missing a spacer. the previous owner just had a toe shifter and then a peice of rubber as a spacer. but when I add the heel shifter and remove the rubber there is too much play in the shaft that connects to the shifter linkage. Any ideas? nothing in the 06 service manual on this? Maybe a picture would help me.
There are only the two shifter arms and a rubber gromet, that's it. There should be almost no play in the "in and out" movement of the shaft if everything is installed correctly.
Make sure you push the shift lever from behind to get it all the way out, add the rubber gromet and each shifter.
While you are doing this remove the entire shaft and clean and grease the shaft. Every bike I have done has been rusted and some would hardly move. Clean with a scotch brite pad and use a marine waterproof grease. Makes a big difference in ease of shifting and finding neutral.
that piece of rubber is supposed to be there. if you look at the shifter shaft, you'll see where the 2 shifter arms are supposed to go, there is a groove for the hold down bolt. from the outside in, shifter arm, shifter arm, rubber spacer.....
go to a auto parts store and buy a neopreme oil drain plug gasket and put that on
before the shift levers but after the rubber gromet and all will be tight. I know it is not
supposed to need this but it works real good.
it looks like I am missing the rubber gromet. the previous owner just had the toe shifter with a peice of rubber that is to big if I want to install the heel shifter. Thanks!

Just take that piece of rubber and cut it down to size.
The HD rubber spacer isn't stepped for a perfect fit.
Don't waste your time or money on the piece.
But if it kills you too bad, let me know.
I'll get the rubber spacer part number for you.
