Default Electronics Question

Anyone know what the P&A circuit is? I hooked by heated clothes into the accessory plug under the seat in front of the battery and in the process I shorted out the fuse. I THOUGHT it would be the accessory fuse, but it was the P&A fuse. Weird. Everything operates correctly though, when I turn on the accessory button.

Any ideas?

Your best answer for the circuit would be to trace the circuit on the wiring diagram in the Service Manual.

As for HD calling the connector the "Accessory Connector" but using the "P&A" fuse instead of the fuse labeled "Accessories," your guess is would be as good as mine. Glad you got it squared away.

FWIW, the Accessory Connector is used by HD for the TP spoiler LED, saddlebag spoilers/LED's and maybe others since it also has the brake light circuit in it.

to my knowledge, it's also used for the accessory switch on ultra and electra glide models.

It might mean "Parts and Accessories". Harley publishes P&A bulletins.

I have also tried to figure what the "P&A" stands for as it does crop up on occasion in the service manual but it is not explained anywhere. I have studied the circuit diagram, and would also encourage you to look through the thread I started on the Accessory connector on this forum.

According to the 08 touring service manual, there is a 15A fuse labelled "P&A - 15A". The upstream side of this fuse is connected to a switched live which goes high when the ignotion is on. The downstream wire is orange / red, and this is used a lot throughout the bike to power numerous accessories, including for example the cig lighter. This wire also connects to the accessory rocker switch, with the outlet of that switch being the orange wire which runs back to the accessory connector you used. In other words, to get the "accessory" to work, ignition needs to be on and the rocker switch needs to be in a closed state. At this point, the only fuse in that line is the fuse you blew, so that is correct.

There is a fuse labelled as "accessory" which is, I agree, a somewhat unfortunate choice of name. This fuse also connects to ignition switched live on the downstream side, and then has an orange / white wire which powers up all sorts of things on the bike (none of which I would term as an accessory if we want to be pedantic) such as the brake light switches.

To further complicate matters, there appears to be a second fuse, which has a 2A rating, and this is also labelled "p&A" on the circuit (sorry, snowing outside so I am not going to do a physical). The inlet also connects back to the ignition switch, but I am not sure under which circumstance this goes live (I suspect the difference here could be when the ignition switch is in the on position or the accessory position.). There is nothing connected to the other side of this fuse so typically it is not in use, but I did spot something which makes me suspect that this could be used if a siren is added to the bike (not the alarm - that is covered elsewhere)
