Default Road Tech Quest and SE Ultra

Hello out there;
I have an '06 SE Electra Glide ultra and bought a HD Road Tech Quest gps to install on it. I bought the fairing mount for it (PN 92100-05) and when I went to install the system found out that because of the leather piece placed on the top of the fairing the mount can't be attached to the appropriate place on the fairing.

Has anyone had this problem? If so why does HD say that the mount is for a 96-later Electra Glide? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to mount this gps unit on my bike? If so please email me or post some pictures of the mount. Thanks.

Smitty

Post some pictures of that bad boy!

You might want to take back the mount you have and add a handlebar mount instead.

Smitty,
Mack sent me your dilemma. I also have a 06 Ultra SE. I bought the fairing mount kit and installed it with a little modification to the leather trim piece on the fairing. I took my time and it looks great. Just take the front off the fairing and remove the leather trim piece. Go ahead and install the GPS mount. Then place a piece of duct tape to the left of the GPS mount (vertically). Remove the GPS Mount. Now you can put the Leather trim piece back on the fairing. The idea of the duct tape is to mark the exact location of the GPS mount's left edge. Now you can use another piece of duct tape and place it on the leather trim piece (vertically) to indicate how much excess material you have to cut off (don't cut anything yet). Now remove the leather trim piece and re-install the GPS mount. Turn the leather trim piece over and you will see small staples holding the leather on the plastic molding. I removed enough staples so that I could fold the leather back and cut the excess plastic molding, giving about 1/8 inch clearance between the left edge of the GPS mount and the right edge of the leather trim piece. When I cut mine I used a small tooth hack saw to get within about 1/4 inch of my cut line and then sanded a little bit away at a time in order to get the perfect fit; that is why you needed to re-install the GPS mount, in order to test the clearance several time between sanding. Now that you have the plastic molding cut to give that 1/8 clearance you will need to cut the excess leather off. I kept about 1 1/2 inches of excess leather so that I could re-attach the leather to the plastic molding and used an epoxy (2 part) mix glue to secure the leather to the plastic molding. Piece of cake. Now it is just a matter of putting it all back together.
Oh by the way, lesson learned... The securing tab on the fairing mount is not 100 percent secure. If you hit a good bump you will loose the whole GPS. I am talking about the piece that connects to the fairing mount, not the one the GPS secures to. Anyway I recommend that you add a small piece ( 1" x 3") of Velcro across the top of those two pieces. Simple cut the "pile" (smooth) portion of the Velcro in half and place one section of the pile to the top of the fairing mount and the other section on the top of the unit that the GPS mounts to. Now when you mount the GPS you can take the full length (1x3) piece of "hook" Velcro and bridge it across the 2 pieces of pile Velcro. I used that Velcro that had the adhesive strips already part of the Velcro. This will give you piece of mind that your GPS will remain intact and all you need to do is remove the hook Velcro bridge piece in order to remove your GPS. Good luck..
Ed

Hey Mistered;

Thanks for the advice. I've already taken the leather piece off and mounted the unit. Will now try the trimming part probably this weekend. I have another question for you. When you hook up the wire from the mount to the input of your radio do you only hear the prompts from the left speaker? Is this right or is there something wrong here. I know the radio works because on XM and radio it's stereo. Thanks for the reply. Smitty

The cord that comes with GPS unit is not a stereo cord, it is a mono cord. Probably why you only hear it from the left side.
