I going to buy the Harley Garmin 660. Harley says the fairing mount is the only thing that will work on my 2011 Ultra Classic. I really don't want to use the fairing mount as they would have to drill a hole in the fairing. Also they want $200.00 to install it. What other choices do I have and also how hard is it to wire to the bike?
Quality products and probably have several different solutions for your problem.
For what its worth, I have the HD fairing mount for the Zumo 550 on my EG Classic and I love it. Yes they had to drill a hole but you can't see it, its underneath the mount. Very neat, no wires show, and it holds the GPS very securely. The dealer didn't charge me anywhere near $200 just for installation, does that include the mount maybe?
Well then unless there's something a lot more complicated with that mount as opposed to the Zumo 550 fairing mount that I have then you're right, that's steep. Sounds like they want 2 1/2 hours labor and I can't imagine it taking that long. If you have another dealer in a reasonable distance you might give them a shot to compare the quotes.
Unfortunately I can't help you with how easy the wiring is, I know better than to go near anything electrical so I let the dealer do the work.
I installed the 550 on my bike with the fairing mount (picture below). The installation is fairly easy. The hardest part was removing the front part of the fairing which is not that hard to do.
I am guessing the wiring of the newer 660 model should be relatively the same except if you want to include the interface module.
If you are at all mechanical (can you change your own oil?) then you should be able to do this installation yourself. Take your time marking the hole location and use the proper size bits.
If you do not want the dash mount, there are a number of options such as the Ram system. I like the dash mount because it puts the unit more in the line of sight which makes it easier to take a quick glance at the GPS while riding.
I have a 2009 Ultra that I have a harley handle bar mount. It mounts on the two bolts that hold the clutch handle. It's in parts book. I had the dealer install it because I wanted the the inter phase wire to have the directions coming through the radio speakers. It seems like the bracket was $150 and wiring harness was another $150.
