It's good that you got a taste of what can happen in the Black Hills. The trick is too not fight it. Relax. If it blows you to the side correct and go on.
Wife and I took a little trip a few months ago. Windy as all get out. She was following on her Deluxe, and as you, gritting her teeth, tensed up and growling at me because I was riding one handed. It was chilly and I hate gloves so I kept one hand in my pocket.
So, go with flow, RELAX and enjoy the ride. The wind will not blow you over. Promise.
I think it Lockhart blew away! Seriously, we didn't make that side trip, but we will be making the trip again, when the wind isn't so fierce. I'd LOVE to know about that good BBQ joint in Lockhart. Yum!
Coming back, we took 71 west and caught 281 north. Where is Lockhart? I've heard of it, but can't place it.
It's about 45 minutes outside Austin just sitting in the middle of God's Country (a/k/a Texas Hill Country). When you go make sure to go early before they run out of prime rib. Bring lots of cash, because they don't take plastic and you're going to want to have some shipped home in addition to whatever you have for lunch.
I'm not a big fan of Black's, but I love their cobbler. Hit them up for dessert.
Also, check out the comments on that link. The feud between Kreuz and Smitty's is very real. I mean, come on. When siblings become bitter enemies over BBQ you KNOW it's gotta be good.

You hit the nail on the head! Definitely had it on. It's on most of the time except for around town jaunts. Love the looks w/o it, but wouldn't dare take a trip with it off.

What is it with you guys?! Mitch (the guy) seemed to be enjoying himself most of the time! (Of course, he is living in the same house with his soon to be ex-wife until they can sell it, so I imagine getting away under any circumstances is a pleasure) I saw him take his hands off the bars about 3 times! You're right...relaxing and not tensing up seems to be the best way to handle it. Having gone through it, I suspect next time I'll be better able to relax and not fight it so much. I did do a pretty good job of not gripping the bars to death, so my hands and forearms never got tired.
I'll say this, my "French" is much improved after that ride! Even taught myself a few new phrases!
Congrats on a safe trip. I find it interesting that when riders start - /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> reminiscing about past trips, they rarely talk about the 'perfect' trips. Usually it's about the wind, rain, snow, mechanical problems.. etc. You now have a story that you'll probably talk about forever. Hope you have better weather for the Sturgis trip.
