Question Stereo question for the bagger folks

Hey All, I'm a proud owner of an FXDC and been playing with the idea of "trading up" to an electra glide. The Ultra is really more than I need/want right now, the Classic seems to be an Ultra "wanna be" (I probably just pissed some folks off... ah well... onward with my question)

What I'm really liking is the idea of a Vivid or Denim black Standard. But I want tunes! So.... what am I looking at to put tunes in the batwing of a Standard?

I know HD gets one kilo buck for their 20W stereo that "must be installed by the dealer". I've seen some of the writeups on doing stereo swaps/upgrades here in the bagger forums. My thinking is, I should be able to get a Standard, and pay someone to put a pretty sweet stereo in it for less than the price difference between the Classic and the Standard ( over two kilo bucks )

Am I lookin' for trouble by doing this? Good plan? Bad plan? Advice?

Thanks!

We did the black denim electra glide standard and put in the Harley radio. Now we are upgrading the speakers and in hindsight, wish we would have gone with different head unit. You can get head units that work with Harley hand controls for about 1/2 as much.

I would suggest you talk to Hogtunes and Biketronics about what you want and pricing before making a decision. Not sure about Hogtunes but I know biketronics has a head unit for less.

You have the ability to build a better sound system than stock for less money.

You said the Ultra was more than you want/need right now. I thought that too last year when I bought my road king (used 2003). lol. Now look at my sig pic.

I would say buy the standard if that is what you like and by an aftermarket system for it.

In a couple of years you will buy an Ultra anyway. lol.

get the installkist from Hawg Wired for an aftermarket head unit. Their kit is way niceer than anyone elses as it is made from billet and black, not wood blocks like biketrinics kit. They list what head units you can use. I went with the Sony marine unit for a little moisture protection. install is a snal, maybe an hour ifd that. It is plug and play, the factory wire harness is already in the fairing so no cutting and no splicing is needed. Dont go HD head unit.

Go to Biketronics and pick up there set-up. You cant go wrong. I dont have there set-up, but it looks to be a pretty good deal. Or you could piece it together yourself, get a good radio, speakers and custom make a mount (not hard) or buy Biketronics mount. I have a Kenwood KVT-512 flip out with Navigation, Bluetooth, iPod hook-up, DVD, touchscreen... I have Polk Component Set MMC5250 in the front and Polk MMC690's in the bags all being pushed by an Alpine amp. You dont have to go to this extreme obviously...

See my pics (the radio in the pics has since been changed to the Kenwood)

I've been through the gammut on this very subject. You can read for days and days lmao. Get a Biketronics kit, the head unit of your choosing. Then the last thing you'll need to do is an amp and speakers. Everyone has their own opinions. I've got mine and it's two words:
Hawg Wired - There is no substitute. Had their 150 watt amp on my Road Glide with their speakers and well.... out fuggin standing. So much so that I just ordered the very same setup for my Electra Glide Classic and got a hell of a price. If you'd like to know where you can get a great price, PM me. It's still not cheap at just barely over $700. But you get what you pay for. Just my two pennies mind you.

Hey Sledge,

What marine unit did you go with? Are you happy with it? I'm looking at model CDXM50ip.
