Try to pick your motel/neighborhood. It may cost a little more per night but I sure do sleep a lot better w/o having to worry about bad people and cockroaches when for the most part they're easily avoided. Still on the motel/hotel topic I too have never been turned down when I've asked to park in sight of the front desk, sometimes it's offered b4 I ask. I try to look for lodging in close proximity to 24hr operations which are normally patrolled fairly regularly by LE. Well lit areas, the usual safety considerations, etc.
I used to get a downstairs room and roll the bike in at night, but since I got the 08, I've got full coverage. If anyone takes it, I'll have an 09!
Used to do this also (handicapped room around the back) but with the batwing I don't think we'll be able to get it through the door any more. Get a cobra link cable and attach your bike to a post for the 2nd floor landing or stairs cover and you should be fine. Made many long distance trips and never had a problem.
Like everyone i lock the forks, saddlebags, tourpak, remove the GPS, all the easy stuff. Then when i'm on longer trips i relax when the rest of the guys run off to wash their bikes before getting them dirty again the next day. That way my cruddy road grime covered bike doesn't look as attractive next to their shiny bikes. Never mind i probably have enough money into mine to buy 2 of theirs
When we sell new equipment to some of our customers they request we spray it all types of funky colors, do our best to make it look beat up and old. The theives go after the new shiny stuff first.
I make sure my insurance is up to date
Lock the forks, lock the igniton, use a cable lock to lock the bikes together.
Activate the alarm/siren, try to get a ground floor room...
If I can't get a room near the bike or park in view of the front desk, I ask if they have security cameras and park in view of one of the cameras.
I have an alarm and park in well lighted area near motel office. Lock everything, leave nothing on the bike. Sometimes I also use a heavy cable lock.
Last fall I had to leave the bike in a small town gas station overnight. I talked to the LEO and asked if they would keep an eye on the bike overnight. They said they would. No problems.
