Not really sure it matters...Motorcyclist, biker, a$$hole, rider, etc... The list can keep going.
There's a reason "Shut up and Ride" became a popular slogan for Harley.
i never did feel the need to dress like a pirate to ride my bike. i'm not riding to impress anyone but myself. been doing it since 67, and plan on riding till i'm on the other side of the turf. as far as labels go, the only one that matters, is where it says "made in usa". yes, harleydom has become yuppified in the past several years, but that's okay too. just another generation enjoying what the old timers have understood for a long time. no big deal either way. i'm a motorcycle enthusiast who happens to enjoy my harleys.
what amazes me though, is the amount of "tee shirt bikers". the ones who own the harley or biker type tee shirts, and will give you advice on what kind of drag pipes you ought to have on your harley, when they hop in their nissan pickup and drive off from the gas station where you're getting gas for your harley. the tee shirt and perhaps a couple of tats is as close as they'll ever get to actually having a real harley. oh i forgot, he probably has the harley davidson sticker in the back window of the truck too. i ride alone, by choice. i know when i want to take a leak, or which road i want to take, or when i want to sit over a good cup of dennys coffee or a great place for a roast beef sammich. nobody else to decide my ride, i like it that way. i'm glad the dorks from new york, i.e. orange county choppers and the other build off shows have drifted away. i do enjoy riding and planning on doing a lot of it this upcoming season. winter still sux. the reason i wear a leather jacket is cause it's far cheaper to trash the jacket than the cost of skin grafts in the event of a slide. you guys ride safe this upcoming summer, and enjoy.
I've always thought of a biker as being an outlaw motorcycle gang member, like a 1%-er, Hells Angel, Devils Disciple etc. All the other terms would describe the other 99%.

I thought it was "F**k it, let's ride"! Guess it depends on what part of the country you're from.
as for the "dressing like a pirate" comment...I wear a leather jacket for the above skin graft point. I may wear chaps if it's fricken cold outside and I want some addtitional protection. I wear a bandana if I don't want my (extremely cropped haircut) head to not burned. Then again, telling fine young ladies to "show me the booty" may not help.
