I have a 9" shield and don't have a buffeting problem and I'm 5'11".
To your question...no, I do not regret getting the batwing.
One problem I see with the batwing is when it rains. I get more water blowing up under the fairing than I ever did on my FatBoy with just a windshield.
For those tall folks that haven't ridden a SG with the stock windshield I can tell you that the wind buffeting makes the bike almost unridable. A bud and myself rented a SG and a RK one weekend and I could only take the buffeting for a few minutes as I literally could not see...it was that bad. My Ultra and my RK are no problem, even with the windscreen removed from the RK. As the others have said, if you're getting the severe buffeting you should look at a taller windscreen.
I am 5'7" and get alot of buffeting with the stock SG windshield. What I did find though if I wear a regular DOT 1/2 helmet the buffeting is pretty bad at times. If I wear a skid lid with very little padding I get no buffeting at all to speak of. I quess the theory of the higher riding helmet has some merit to it. I did order a 6 1/2" clearview recurve that should be here any day...anxious to see if that helps at all.
I have a SG and put on an 8" plain jane e-bay windshield. I'm 6' and I got the windshield for $30.
The fork baffle makes more of a difference to buffeting than the windshield. Most of the air causing buffeting is not coming over the windshield. It's coming under the fairing. While riding hold your had across your chest with your palm facing down and you will feel the air coming from below. Fork baffle takes alot of that away.
Windscreen did help...just not as much as the fork baffle.
i wish i would have got a road king and a removable batwing that way on the really hot days i could get more air. and on the normal days i could still jam the stereo. i tend to ride everyday back and forth to work and on hot muggie days it would be nice to remove the batwing.

The adjustable wind deflectors for the sides of the fairing help alot on those hot days. You can turn them kinda like the old wing windows that used to be in pickups to direct more air to you.
