DIY Detach Fairing for RoadKing DONE NEW PICS ON p.2
Decided I wanted a detatch fairing for trips to the river and with the old lady on the back other wise ive never riden with wind protection before so did not want to spend much on one. Took an outer fairing off and 2003 ultra that i bought on ebay. Placed my windshield on my bike and cut out the bottom where the headlight origanly mounts til i got enough of a fit. Going to mount the fairing with the top 3 winshield bolts and drill one hole behind each passenger lamp. then cutting my windshield off flush at the top that way i can put on any height or tint i want of windshield. Also bought bushings to replace the rubber mounts so it stays on in place. What you guys think?

I will have $250 into this when all said and done i think i will be happy. And it will be painted black with black nut covers placed over the stainless steel bolts and will have a 4 1/2 " dark tint winshield on top
you can do the same thing and leave the rubber mounts and it will still work but im just putting in steel bushings from other detatch fairing makers and just carry a 1/2 wrench in my bags and half a turn on each nut will come right off
Great idea and execution, but given that your handlebars are above the batwing it seems that the wind protection wouldn't be a big improvement over the stock RK windshield.

"Placed my windshield on my bike and cut out the bottom where the headlight origanly mounts til i got enough of a fit." how much did you cut off?
Not alot. just the inside of where is starts to square in and the bottom where is ovals for the headlight. if i had to do it all over again i would of cut even less out cause the fairing hole rests on the very front of the light and i kept sliding it over the center til it fits but its still going to work. i just cut it a hair bigger then it needed to be.
