you can do this:
buy a cigarette lighter style tiny pump
(takes too long, works it self to death)
buy a $30 air tank, and refill it at the local garage (.75 cent most places)
(holds 130psi, will fill most bike tires a few times)
buy a small compressor
(you will out grow it quick)
buy a 5 hp /20 gal compressor
(~$300 or so, will do ANYTHING in the future but spray paint)
i have all the above options, except the small compressor
for putting air in Touring shocks, i turn OFF the compressor, run it down to ~35 psi with an Impact wrenct (just run it till psi drops) then hit the shocks with that.
that way i don't blow them up.
FWIW, GOOGLE "craftsman club" and you get a monthly flyer that is ~50% cheaper than regular prices.

I do not recommend using any compressor for use on the shocks. You could ask my friend about how much he spent replacing blown out shocks that he filled with a compressor. For your use, a cheap pancake compressor works fine.
