I am planning on doing my own 10k service. I want to install the HD Reduced Effort Clutch kit. The way I understand it the kit has a weaker clutch spring. If I have a stock motor on an 05 RoadKing would I be better off keeping the stock clutch spring and installing the rest of the kit on the transmission side?
One other question along the same lines. Since I bought the bike used I will be checking the clutch plates for wear, I have been noticing some slipage when riding. I was thinking about installing a Barnett extra plate clutch kit. If so will the stock clutch spring work or should I install something different if using the Rdeuced Effort Clutch kit?
Sorry for the long post but this will be the first time I will be doing this stuff myself and you guys are a wealth of knowledge.
If you get the Harley kit I'd put the whole thing in, including the spring.
I used the kit on my 99 Dyna. I love it.
I know its much lighter but I romp on it pretty hard. I have never been disappointed with the spring from the kit.
I can't imagine at 10k you have any noticeable clutch wear. Just make sure everything is adjusted properly. If you don't like it you can swap it out. With the Dyna if you bend the spring just right, it can and will go through the derby cover. So no big deal swapping it out. Check to see if thats true with your RK.
Good Luck
The Reduced Effort Clutch kit was installed in my bike recently. I like the way I'm more able to feather the clutch in low-speed maneuvers.
Also, since you bought your bike used, you may want to first try changing the primary fluid, since you're not likely to know what type of lubricant was used in the primary. When I first bought my bike (used) I also noticed some clutch slippage. I then changed the primary fluid to one designed for use with wet clutches (dino, not syn). I immediately noticed some improvement in the clutch operation, with less slippage. It's an inexpensive solution that just might work in your case.
These are the ramps used on 06 and later which are the identical ones in 36808-05 which retails $44.95 The majority of folks that bought or buy the kit end up using only the ramp assembly anyway and didn't change the spring.
FWIW, you can also change out to different springs for different pounds if you have slippage

I installed the hd kit on the 01wg I had made a big difference in traffic, did not notice any difference as far as slippage. I used to get a sore clutch hand
