As i am planning for a long coast to coast ride this summer, it came to me that i dont have a way to charge my cell of Ipod on my roadking classic. Any one know of a way to mount a external power point on a bike like mine with no faring. Looked on the HD cat and saw what i believe plugs into a faring harness.
I need some ideas, I will be trying to stay in RV parks so i may or maynot have a plug to use.
You can go to the Auto parts store and buy a cig lighter and put it in your soft or hard bag and then just wire it to the battery....with a fuse of course.....I used a pig tail from an old battery tender so i had a quick dis-connect.
There are other options....they make a power point that mounts where your horn mounts.....etc...

I added a cigarette lighter to my bikes for years, back when I smoked......no big thing.
I hope you realize that the rapid charger (car charger) is not really good for your cell or ipod and will shorten the battery life if you use it on a regular basis. Whenever possible, you should plug them in a 120V recepticle to charge them.
You're going to love the coast to coast ride! But when you return you'll be looking for a bike with a fairing and a stereo/GPS.

Or after the trip he could add an aftermarket detachable fairing to his current ride, best of both worlds...
there's a wire on my Road King that's not hooked up and I plan on putting a 12v socket to it...had a rubber plug and tape on it but it fell of..here's a pic where it's located...it's on the right side under next to the steering tube
To the OP, I have a RKC and am interested in doing this too. I know someone makes a cool chrome one you can mount to the bars, kuryakin? Maybe someone will post. I would assume if it's external, it would have to have a water tight plug in it, when not in use.
I know some people have wired them to be on all the time, as opposed to a circuit that only operates when ignition/acc is on, and had a long loose wire on it, not mounted anywhere per se, because they wanted to throw something in a saddlebag or somewhere out of sight, while they went away from the bike, and whatever it was would still charge while they were away from the bike. Other people warn against that, saying you could deplete your battery. All I'm saying is think about how you would use it, before you decide how/if to mount it, and how you will wire it, etc.
Let us know what you end up doing, hope more posts answer your Q

I made one for my bike (see pics) with a quick disconnect that plugs directly in to the wiring harness. I keep the module in my tourpack, but you could put yours in your saddlebag. Works great when charging my cell phone, camera, etc... I made mine with a Deutch connector so it plugs right in to the HD harness (AUX) plug which should be under your seat or side cover. If you're interested, PM me and I can make one for you.
I am right in the middle of doing this very thing. What I am doing is a while back I installed a battery tender with the pigtail wiretied to the harness on the left side right above the trans.I am running 2 wires(in wire loom) along the bottom of the frame wiretied to the harness that runs there from the factory,up the front of the frame under the nacelle and out by the handlebars on the left side. I put a 2 wire connector on the end and wiretied it to the handlebars where it comes out of the nacelle cover.I put another 2 wire connector on the other end to plug it into the tender pigtail.wally world has a power port with about a 12 inch pigtail which I put another 2 wire connector on.All I have to do to use this contraption is plug in at the tender connector then plug the power port into the handlebar connector and put the power port in my windshield bag to plug phone, gps or anything else in.When not in use unplug power port and put in one of the bags.I have covers to put over connectors when not in use.Sounds like alot of stuff, only cost about 10 bucks for everything and when not in use you can't see any of it.

It's amazing what you can do with a little ingenuity.
