Hi, I presently have a 07 Softail Custom. It is a good bike and I have had no problems. I am thinking of trading up to a 09 Road King Standard with ABS. Question to those guys with 09's what are your thoughts? Any problems? Anything you would change or don't like? I am 6'3" tall and I reckon I will need to do the higher handlebar kit, and, of course, it will need a tuner and pipes. I am interested to hear your opinions. cheers shep.
Coming from a Softail myself, Night Train, I purchased a used Road King last year but kept the softail in case I didn't like the tourer. Well, I basically never rode the softail much after that and ended up tradeing them both in this year for an Ultra.
Very different feel between the two bikes and it takes a little getting use to sitting up on the Road King as opposed to "in" the softail. After a few rides and you are use to the Road king, it is hard to go back to sitting on the softail. I also recommend highway pegs to stretch your legs out.
Good luck!
All in all the new tourers are nice. IF you don't like anything, it would probably be the electronic throttle. It lags some and doesn't respond as quick as you're used to. So if you ride "aggresive, you might want to have them throw some cams in it with the pipes and A/C.
I love my 09 RK standard. get the ABS and Cruise.... I'm 6'1" and my handlebars seem ok but I'm going to investigate either the RK High bars for the Heritage style bars.
I just got the power package from Jaimie at Fuelmoto. I've installed the dyno tuned jackpots but not the AC or PC yet.
I had a 2000 FXST, and now an '09 Road King. The RK handles, brakes and rides MUCH better than the softail. I still think the softail is a better town bike because it's narrower and lighter, but the RK rules for touring.
The 09 touring is a big step up IMHO. I have ridden many bikes over the years and this is the best one ever. No problems with TBW. The lag is not really an issue. I took care of that when I did my stage 1 using TTS Master tune and Dyno time. The ABS is worth every cent.
