ok, i did it. installed my oil cooler tonite and other than getting that d**n gasket to line up, not too bad. the only thing that freaked me out was the instructions say to torque the adaptor nut to 16-21 lbs. i installed and snugged it up with my socket wrench. my torque wrench starts at 25 lbs but i could dial it below 25 to 20 lbs. i guess when i snugged it i did it fairly tight. (didn't really think so). i went to torque and the wrench never "clicked". as i tightened it seems like i was really getting too tight. i.e. stripped. i stopped and completed the install. appears to be no leaks. think i would really have to make an effort to strip. any ideas/comments?
That gasket can be somewhat frustrating to say the least, if I do it again I think I'll use a little 3m weather stripping glue to hold it in place. As for the nut I torqued mine with a in/lb wrench to 240 in/lbs (this converts to 20 ft/lbs) because the ft/lb wrenches are not very accurate at that low reading. I would watch it real close and if it starts leaking take it apart and recheck it all.

Just checking Sparky. Nothing gives you that kicked in the gut feeling like tightening a inch pound bolt with a foot pound wrench. Like you described, it won't click before damage is done. Texas Pro has the answer.
I tourqued min as specified in the instructions. Unfortunately, my kit came with the "no adhesive on either side" gasket. I have a very slow leak that only appears after a full warm up. Once shut down and wiped clean, there is no overnight leaking. Clean newspaper under the bike proved that.
I did acquire a new gasket that does have one side with the adhesive. I will be installing it this weekend. Hopefully, my problem will be solved.
For those who have installed the HD Premium Oil Coller, how did you align the gasket? Specifically, there is a considerable amount of rotational play in relation to the rectangular slots in the gasket and the two "ears" that stick out of the back of the adaptor plate. The gasket will stay within the round profile of the two mating surfaces, but you can rotate the gasket about a quarter ince either way.
I looked at that real close when I did mine because I was concerned about the "slop" as well. The way the slots are cut I couldn't see it making any flow difference at all. I just tried to center mine the best I could and I didn't have any oil pressure drop after the install so all is well!
Now that its installed, be aware that only Harley oil filters will fit, since the cooler plate pushed the filter out a little further. I tried a Fram filter and learned the hard way.
