I haven't considered a nav. system until my last trip and discussed it with a guy who had a Garmin on his BMW. Anyone have any experience with these and how they work with the radio? Recommendations?
The Garmin Quest 2 is a much better unit. It has the entire US database. It will work with the HD mounts or you can use a mount like RAM. You can also download the HD dealer file to your POI.
I have the original Quest unit mounted to the handlebars with a RAM mount. Love it... works great. Someone on the site provided a file and instructions for downloading all of the HD dealers to the Quest. That also worked fine. As pointed out, the Quest will not hold the entire US map like the Quest II but it will hold information for approximately 3 states. With the Windows software you can select specific regions to download along any route for your trip. For me, I can live with this slight limitation and save some $$$. In either case, you can't go wrong with Garmin. I also have their GPS MAP 196 which I used for flying. Good products.
I boughtg a quest 2 and used the HD dash mount on a SG. I know it ranks people that the "cradle" that comes standard with the HD quest (road tech) cost another $90.00 as a special order at HD. But if you buy the HD Road Tech (Quest) you would spend an extra $70.00 for a car mount annyway (which is standard in the Quest2). So still cheaper. Quest 2 on web under 500.00 and special order cradle 90.00, plus dash mount at 56.00. Order Road Tech 500.00, plus 56.00 for dash mount, and 70.00 for car mount. About equal but you can find Quest 2 even cheaper/
HD calls the parts the "Cradle" part #92108-05 about $90.00 and the "Cable" part #92129-05 $25.00 or so. I did not order the cable, as it plugs into the radio to give sound, but then you lose music!!!!
+ Quest 2 has much more memory and all US loaded. Quest only loads limited maps which you have to change with computer. I also loaded the HD dealer Points of Interest (POI) from the web and the quest 2 still has room with US map.
- Quest 2 is silver wihout HD logo. I can buy a decal from dealer if wanted.
I also use a RAM mount when using it on Dyna. But its not powered, so only good for 15 hours or so. Then you have to charge it in a vehicle with car mount or A/C charger. But it cleans up the bike because no wires. Another reason I went with the dash mount for SG.
Biggest drawback with dash mount....it vibrates at low rpms & idle. When running above 30mph, its pretty stable.
