Curt,
I have V&H Monster Ovals on my new Ultra. They're very throaty at idle or low RPM's, but they actually seem to get quieter at higher (read: highway) RPM's. They look good and sound good (although there are a number of guys here that think they're too quiet). Again, exhaust volume is a very subjective topic, what I like won't work for a lot of the other guys.

What type of helmet are you using? Full face helmets tend to exacerbate the noise from a Harley exhaust, mine sounds louder with the helmet than without.

Good luck with your pipe selection.
Thanks for the feedback. I was looking at those Monster Ovals and they looked to be a possible solution

I DO wear a full face helmet and it may indeed exacerbate the problem.

No, my friend, you don't get it. BMW riders couldn't care less about what others think about their rides. My initial comment and question come from needing to find a solution to a problem. Because I am fortunate enough to own two brands of bikes, I am able to make some very valid comparison. I was not "trolling" for a flame war, just looking for some solid info. What comes back - with many exceptions - are inarticulate rants about people's rights to do whatever they want in this world, including riding bikes with loud pipes.

You know, the most telling of all the flames was the one with the picture of Mr. Rogers (the BMW rider) and the fellow who looked like Atilla the Hun (the Harley rider) at AJ's Beemers in Mass. Now, tell me that folks aren't trying to make themselves out to be different because they ride Harleys.

Listen, I'm in for a good ribbing and clean fun, too. But many folks here are a little too heavy handed about their opinions. It reminds me of a day, many years ago, when as a plumber/tradesman I went back to school to get a degree. I was busting my hump. I had a saying - don't know who wrote it - but it said "education is the process of moving from cocksure ignorance to thoughtfull uncertainty."

I don't want to come to this forum - or hoped I wouldn't - to find "cocksure ignorance. Unfortunately, that's mostly what I see and that, nmy friend, is sad. OTOH, I have seen a lot of very thoughtful comments from folks who don't see any of it as insulting. They don't respond to my comments as you have here. Why do you suppose that is? Read what you have said. Read what they have said...all from the stuff I posted. Hmmmm.

BTW - I have a very responsible job and avocation. I am loved in both places for my concerned and considered manner and am fully happy in my life and in my love and in my motorcycling.

Like I said before read YOUR posts and if you don't understand your problems in that area you need to seek professional help to understand why and how you are offensive
Very simple
I will also stop to give you a hand if you need it. I don't dislike you. I don't know you other than your treatment of others with your words. I dislike the way you treat others, I do understand your comments are coming from a troubled person. That trouble may be from events in your life that have shaped you and I'm sorry you've had to go through those events.
Your offensive comments are in almost all the posts you have written look at this one post listed here you refer to "YOUR BRASS *****" (legend in your own mind comment) "couldn't care less (opposite of many other comments you've made), stupidity.smarta$$" (just a mean comment) all those words are in this one post.
If you don't understand why you have generated a negative persona about yourself, seek professional help to try to understand, maybe you can better yourself in the future and gain knowledge on how to communicate.
I am not hurt by you, and I'm not trying to hurt you. I'm completely serious about you getting help I'm not flaming or making fun, mental health issues are common and hurt many especially the person who needs treatment. I just hope you can learn something from these last couple of days that will help you with the rest of your life.
Best wishes and ride safe

With as much riding as Curt supposedly does, he sure seems to have more than ample time to reply with very long posts to many who have commented in this way too long thread.

Curt, how are you finding all this time to be at the computer??

Quite true, but personal annoyance is subjective and maybe that is why you strayed down the wrong path of making it so personal. Of course some bikes are are going to be more objectional than others in many ways, but we shouldn't try to force our opinion others in such an offensive manner. Why would folks ride a loud bike if they didn't like it?

It is true that laws will be created, but isn't that just someone with a bigger stick forcing their opinion? Maybe we need the laws, maybe not, but you can't change minds by attacking. them personally.

A poll would have been a lot more benefical to learn what others thought. Then you wouldn't been hurt when you didn't get the replies that you wanted.

Curt,
For the most part, I agree with you. But you should know that you're going to rouse people up asking a very rhetorical question. The factory pipes on the bike are much preferable to me as well. I see a lot more Harley's with after market pipes than I do stock pipes. Who does THAT make the "sheeple?" I don't see spending 1k-5k to make my Harley a little faster than other Harley's but still considerably slower than many other full-sized bikes. If you want to richen things up to cool the bike down then fine. Otherwise, just leave it alone and ride.

Does this thread have an Energizer battery??

I like the noise (mine aren't to bad, I have the Fuel Moto Rush &PCIII deal). Not enough to **** people off, but enough to hear my bike. I've been a "gear head" since the mid 70's, always have liked the sound of a great running motor. Personal preference, nothing less, nothing more.

Thank you, Ben, for you kind reply. I learned about twins and performance from my other brand of bike: the cost to improve performance is astronomical compared with the actual gain. I now love my Harley again, with it's quiet stock pipes. It's got plenty of get up and go. I set the cruise control at 70 on the interstate and seem to get right into "flow."
