Why all the noise?
Below is verbiage posted by you.
the "good-old-boy" type than educated, articulate riders.
Curt
I am aware and respect the fact that the above noted quotation made by you is purely speculative on your part and subject to opinion from others. It appears to be riddled with stereotypical and judgemental suggestions, mildly pontifical yet coupled with an added hint of sublimity. Obviously the overwrought of loud pipes has offended you and seek to juxtapose an answer.
Well sir, you did come to the right place, you just opted to wear the the visiting teams jersey on a home field or court. The freedom of choice led you to this your decision.
This is a forum after all.
With all respect sir,
Your opinion is purely based on feedback provided by others in response to your original information seeking post titled Why so loud?.
Allow me, if you will, to interject my confusion and or quandary as to why this question was even entertained much less presented from an individual that is aware and familiar with the Harley Davidson experience?
The feedback was provided by others in an attempt to answer your question and was obtained by presenting your dilema in a manner that can be perceived as having a negative, non-conforming demeaning tone. Would you have not expected such a quaquaversal response?
A prouder individual than a Harley Davidson owner, you will not find.
What you have here is the backbone of America at your disposal ready to lend an ear, a hand perhaps or provide advice that is needed based on actual results and experience.
I have found this forum to be a place free of judgement when a question is posted that does not appear to have a hidden agenda, negative inferences or sublimity.
A safehaven of derision while seeking answers to the most basic of motorcycle specifically Harley Davidson's questions. Questions of elemantary knowledge are are answered without scorn or mockery.
Not because one is to blind in the way a thought or question is offered, but rather to seek the answer to a question that has a finite answer in most cases. Not one that the presenter may already have the answer to but is not honed enough to realize it.
And in conclusion...the remark regarding uneducated good ole boys and the lack of articulate riders is agian subjective and purely speculative on your part. These good ole boys have enough education and to kmowledge pertaining to how to enter, present themselves and ask valid information seeking questionsin a forum. They have more skill experience and knowlede than most articulate riders I have ever ridden for the past 20 years with.
I wish you well in seeking an answer to your question. It is my opinion that you sir are the one that needs the education. Not from an academic perspective but rather from an etiquette common sense approach to your minds quests.
PS. I do concider myself a good ole boy! I am an educated scientist and an articulate rider. Does this make me better or worse than you or anyone else? I think not...
Harley riders come in all shapes, colors, sizes, educational background and skill levels. All with one common bond....our Harley Davisdon's!
Go enjoy your new pipes!

That aside, there are many legitimate reasons for it, but not everyone likes the loud pipes, and for those that do, they all like different levels of loud.
As part of a complete modification of some sort, higher intake breather, higher outflow exhaust, and remapping of EFI, to many people is setting it up RIGHT, what the government won't allow HD to do directly these days. Some get better mileage this way, better performance, and find themselves w/ a cooler running, more efficient engine, but YMMV
Some think loud pipes draw more attention to them, which may actually help others notice them, from a safety perspective. I have heard riders before I saw them, and not always from 'obnoxiously' loud pipes, just like I've heard big trucks or muscle cars sometimes before I saw them.
People and things still get hit by trains on occasion, even though there are TRACKS everywhere that trains go, and in many cases signs and signals notifying you of the train, imagine how many people would be killed by trains if they made NO noise. Matter of fact, our stupid light rail has only been up about a year and is already killing people.
Aside from that, things take on a personality, and in some minds, a preconceived notion of what they should look like and sound like. The human mind naturally correlates repetitive attributes about an object or person and assigns stereotypes to it, or him/her.
Ever see that full blooded Asian comedian w/ a deep Texas accent? Catches you off guard the first time. Ever see a big guy w/ a soft voice, or meet someone w/ a deep voice over the phone and then see them in person and they're 85 lbs soaking wet?
If you saw a Prius w/ flames coming out the back and a roaring engine, would you not think something was wrong w/ that picture?
If you like muscle cars of old, you probably like a little rumble in the exhaust. Some prefer headers and straigt pipes like they're at the drag strip, others prefer a milder rumble of glass packs or something that they can still drive around, but very few people that like hot rods try to put the quietest exhaust possible on them, right? Even though some modern techically advanced imports might outperform some muscle cars in certain aspects. Like even a built out hot rod of old may not keep up w/ a porsche in the twisties, but that's not what it was made for.
I see Harleys the same way. Some like to tour w/ them for thousands of miles, some like to bar hop, some like to stare at em in a garage or a trailer, but they're still Harleys, and enough people have seen enough Harleys that have louder pipes and appreciate that for whatever reason, and emulate that in their own rides. Others like Harleys but choose not to go that route.
I don't see why that is so hard to understand, or why anyone would want to condemn what some feel to be a positive trait about a well known machine.
Take that atypical response and shove it up your quiet pipes, sir. Have a nice day.
Besides all that, you seem embarassed because people are looking at you on your loud machine.....I have news for you that you're probably not used to on that BMW, they are not looking because your noise pisses them off, they are looking because they want to see that Harley.......don't get that much on the foreign model do ya?

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
My neighbor has a very obnoxious Indian that he #%$@ feels the need to harp on every time he starts it. He just got a couple weeks ago, and I can tell you due to the fact I like my peace and quiet and we have 3 year-old that takes naps, it won't be long before I go over there and rip his head %#%$& off.
That being said, I have an RKC with a Stage 1 and V&H True Duals...it just sounds like a Harley. But, while in my neighborhood, or any residential area, park, etc, I don't get on the throttle because I don't think others should be forced to hear what I like.
On the highway, on the other hand, I love to rap on the throttle to hear those V&H pipes grunt.
I get the thinking that some bikes are too loud, but posing your question that way you did hcmiller, I think you knew the responses you'd get.
