Probably varnish. The gas sits in the bowl then evaporates down to nothing but varnish. you get on ride around and it runs fine bit the varnish doesn't let the needle seat correctly so it leaks. Dirty needle sitting in newly filled gasoline in the bowl,,dissolves varnish,,and problem is solved....kinda.

I would recommend a bottle of gumout or similar and a fresh tank of sunoco ultra to clean your bowl needle and seat.

Sounds like that might be it.I'd make sure there's no gas in your oil. You didn't say if your petcock was closed or not.
