The HD Synthetic Oil is not great quality stuff whereas AMSOIL is top quality. But don't limit yourself to just those two as a comparison as there are also other brands of excellent quality Synthetic Oils on the market such as Red Line (that's all they make) and of course Mobile 1 etc. etc.
Good analogy. The money we put in these things is unreal. Oil seems to be an item many don't like paying a little extra for. Kinda funny at times.
Ah, just look in the right place and you may find it cheaper than you think.
Can you PM me some prices on 20/50 gallons or quarts (whatever is cheapest) and 75/140(trans) shipped to 19709
Every poll I've seen on this and another major HD forum results in Amsoil and Mobil 1 being the most used oils. Syn 3 a distant 3rd.
I use and like Amsoil but I'm sure Mobil 1 is just as good.
I'm sure it is good oil,but I don't use it because it is not avaiable everywhere, should a emergency come up out on the road.I like the Mobile one V twin better, has a higher heat rating, you can get anywhere.
Amsoil is a very good oil. I looked all over for it and couldn't find any locally so I got some Mobil V-Twin Syn as I wanted to change the oil before my first ride.
I did find a local NAPA that sells it but it's over a dollar more a quart than the Mobil V-Twin. I'll have to see what kind of mood i'm in for the next change.
It doesn't matter as long as it is a oil spec'd for the hole you are pouring it in.....I'm still waiting to meet the guy that actually "wore" out a properly serviced later model Harley engine.

I've seen several oil tests that included Syn3 and none showed it to be an inferior product. In fact, no test that I've seen show any of the major synthetic players to be inferior overall, regardless of price, with none standing out as a clear winner. Since you've brought it up I'm sure you've seen evidence to support your statement and I would also like to see it. Thanks.
Walley,
Do a search on oil, by the time you are done reading all the opinions on oil, you won't know what you want to use or what is better. There are tons of oil threads on here. I have spent many days reading them and still unsure if I am going to change to a different brand yet.
I want to know if I am wasting money buying Amsoil instead of HD oil???? Opinion??
Both will do a fine job of protecting your engine, as will any of the major players in the synthetic field (Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Redline, etc.). A wise policy would be to buy the oil that is most easily accessible and least expensive.
As for your question about whether you should switch from Amsoil to Syn3 and I would say no. I've seen no test or credible evidence that Syn3 is inferior overall to Amsoil or anything else, but Syn3 will almost assuredly be more expensive that any oil on the market. Based on that alone I would say to stick with what you have, or find another oil that you can obtain more easily and is less expensive. They're all good.
I don't use it, but probably the best bang-for-the-buck available is Mobile 1 15w50, available from Walmart for about $23/5-qt. bottle. I've seen three tests conducted by MC mags that show it to be a fine product and a good choice for engine oil. I would not use it in the primary because it contains moly, which may or may not interfere with clutch operation because it is a friction modifier.
