Default Crash Bars

I've been riding for 45 years, but I just got my first Touring model, a 2009 Street Glide. I really do like it and the OL luvs it. The touring models are the only one's that come with a crash bar and I've never really had much use for them. I also notice most guys keep them or even replace them with after-market bars like the Lindby. I've also noticed that most "custom baggers" remove them. Should I keep it or loose it...pros and cons?

I think they look natural on a bagger..Mighty handy place to mount Hwy pegs too!

They also come in handy when you forget to put your kickstand down because you are flapping your gums and now paying attention to what you are doing I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THATS EVER DONE THIS!

Go ahead. Take it off. You'll soon be posting the question "What's the best way to pick up a fallen touring bike".

I also know of another reason to have it. Two years ago, a good freind of mine (female) was driving her Fat Boy around a curve, when a teenage girl driving her cage crossed the centerline and hit her....yes, both were doing 55mph or more. The girl evidently dropped her cell phone and was trying to pick it up when it happened. Luckily my freind was hit on the left side highway bar and not head on. Believe it or not, she didn't dump the bike. In fact, the bike did a fair amount of damage to car. In the end, my freind wasn't hurt, and as far as the bike, the highway bar, floor board and brackets had to be replaced. That's what I call being lucky!

Not that you hope to every lay it down, but when mine went down the crash bar saved me a lot of money on repairs. I say keep it.
And +1 on the highway pegs.

I agree with both ken and caddman,, plus it gives you some alternative foot positions on longer rides

keep them. many have turned them over in the garage moving them. my wife made me put a set on her heritage at the dealer before she rode it home......several weeks later pulling into an icehouse and we were parking, I was already done, she was waiting for me, while coming in slow, new rock road gave way on her back tire, she put foot down to stablize, rocks gave way under her foot and it slid...bike in slow motion layed over.....rested on crash bar...no damage to bike an just a minor scratch on crash bar...only thing hurt was her pride in front of 100 bikers!
